We don’t talk much about the 1968 Cyclone GT 500 because we know so little and there just aren’t any around. However, we recently received an email from K. Peppers with some information and photos that we thought deserved a little special attention. If you want to know more about these cars we have listed as much as we know on this site and even register them here.

This car is not for sale so don’t ask.


Peppers states that he is restoring the GT 500 for his cousin whose father bought it new. He hasn’t started on the restoration yet and based on these photos I think he should keep it original un-restored. What do you think? He is going to get a Marti Report before doing anything.

Tommy Hussey has white GT 500, or does he?

I recently received a phone call from Tommy regarding his white 1968 Cyclone GT that he purchased from the original owner. The owner swears the car had never been modified since she owned it. Tommy has since repainted the car and added some NASCAR decals but states he has not otherwise modified the car AND it has both the Cyclone and GT 500 emblems including the flags. However, when he had a Marti Report completed for the car it came back without listing the GT 500 option. Does he have a GT 500 or not?

We need more evidence to figure this one out. The car was built on March 3, 1968. This is the same month as the Atlanta Race on March 31, 1969 when the first dealer promotion was held. (Read the articles much further down on this page regarding that race and the Ford World report.) Most of those cars were white.  Tommy’s car is a 302; rumor has it that the white cars were 302s and the orange cars were the 390 and 428 CJs.

It is also worth a note that the Ford World report refers to the cars as Mercury  Montego Cyclone 500s and not as GT 500s as the later option was called. The cars I have found with the GT 500 option were all built in a small cluster of cars in early May of 1968 just prior to their appearance at the Charlotte race in late May.

So the question remains; is this a GT 500? Is it a dealer built car? Does anyone know how the 160 promotional cars for the 1968 Atlanta race were built? Were they something the factory did based on some special order or were these cars simply Cyclones with emblems added by a dealer or the factory? The search for information goes on. You should also compare the photo here with the ones of the Hans Melin white car below. His also has the emblems but he sold the car many years ago and no longer has the VIN info.

Steve Berg recently provided us with this information:

In the August  1968 Motor Trend you can read the mention of the Cyclones for the Atlanta Race. They even mention Cale as having won. Also note that they wished to duplicate this slick promotion for the Charlotte World 600.

The next image is the bottom piece of Steve’s Cyclone build sheet. Notice it starts off with Charlotte 600. Steve states that the Cyclone never had a hood stripe, but notice the word hood is spelled hpod. He believes the line guys got confused and left it off. Steve has talked to the original owner, and he said it was never on the car.

In the 3rd document, Steve has provided a copy of a Build Sheet for a Cyclone that was for sale a few years ago. The seller sent him the Build Sheet and Marti Report. The gentleman selling it stated that it was 1 of 14 built for the race. The image is very poor but hope you can make out the important information.


Here is some more information that was sent to us by a reader.

I received a wonderful Christmas Present from one of our regular visitors and contributors to this site. John Drilling provided us with a newspaper advertisement for the GT 500 dated Friday, April 5, 1968. The newspaper is the Herald Journal of Spartenburg, SC.


The good news is that it describes the Montego Cyclone 500 in some detail. It includes a 390 GT engine, performance handling package, blacked out grill, dual body tape stripes, GT Turbine Wheels Covers, CYCLONE 500 IDENTIFICATION, 390 GT Engine Plaque and BUCKET SEAT interior in black or parchment trim with CORAL EXTERIOR PAINT, CHECKERED FLAG VICTORY PLAQUE. What is never mentioned in the ad is the transmission.

Now for the bad news; it still leaves a slight bit of confusion. As we currently understand it all of the GT 500 cars were built around the first of May 1968 and most if not all were in the Coral paint scheme. So, if this is correct was the Bayless Mercury dealer advertising a car that was yet to be built and delivered or was it one of the Cyclone 500 cars from the Atlanta Race?

Unfortunately, this advertisement does not specifically mention GT 500. This may have been due to the previous run of Atlanta cars being labeled as Cyclone 500s. Most if not all of these were white with a rumored Coral car or two. There is also no mention of the 428 CJ option in the ad above. However, since it is dated prior to the build date of most is not all GT 500s I bet the information provided by the factory to the dealers was not very specific or accurate on the yet to be manufactured sixty GT 500 cars. We have seen this with pre-production Ford Talladegas and other cars where the lead information is not the same as what actually was built in some details.

I have currently of the opinion that this ad is for the yet to be built GT 500 since it mentions the two interior colors and Coral exterior color.

Here is proof of the VIN over stamping on the 1968 “R” Code Cyclone GT 500.

What you see below are photos of my own personal GT 500; VIN, Data Plate and Inner Fender Stampings. I have purposely not included the entire VIN for obvious reasons. However, this VIN has been provided to the Marti Report folks and verified as a GT 500 428 CJ “R” code.

In summary, on the VIN the “R” is actually an “F” with some form of over stamp to make it an “R”. The Data Plate is a ordinary “R” stamp. On the inner fenders the location where the “R” should be in the sequence is left blank. On one fender some previous owner scratched an “R” into the blank spot.

At the bottom in the circle is an enlargement of the “R” in the VIN to assist you in seeing the over stamp. You can see that the “F” portion is obviously a deeper stamp than the remainder of the “R”.

I would love to see some other owners “stampings” to help the non-believers see the light.

I have just receied some additional photos from Hans regarding his 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 in White! You can read more about the car below and I have added all the photos Hans has sent. From the lettering on the front fender in one photo you can see that this 390 did some track time. It was part of the Wilson Ford Drag Club!

We are getting closer on info concerning the Orange GT 500s but now these white cars need to be documented; please help us out if you have any additional information.

Hans is also going through some Chemo treatments so say a prayer for him.

Here is another recent photo of a 68 Cyclone GT 500 just discovered in a back yard. It is a 428 CJ!

The black stripes on the hood ARE NOT ORIGIMNAL. Marvin Speaks suggests that the reason some of the GT 500s have white stripes and others have black is that the 390 cars all had white stripes and the 428 CJ cars had black. Makes sense to me but can anyone confirm this with a Marti Report or other documentation? He said he bought a 390 GT 500 in May of 1968 and it had the white stripes.

1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500Well, now there is even more info and more confusion. Thanks to Hans Melin of CA we have some more info to put into the basket. He once owned a 1968 Wimbledon white Cyclone GT 500. He was the second owner and purchased it in the early 70s in original condition. It had a 390 and all the appropriate flag and 500 badges. Since he no longer owns the car or has the VIN and Marti Reports were not available we can not document it but we do have vintage photos which indeed show what looks like the proper emblems. This car was sold new in Santa Ana, CA a long distance from the Atlanta Region that was believed responsible for these cars. However, it is possible that it was delivered to CA. However, this does tend to support the idea of multiple special promotional cars out of 1968. If you have another let us know, we are trying to put a puzzle together.

As usual, I am wrong again; there are more questions about the entire Cyclone GT 500 issue. Thanks to John Drilling from Greendale Wisconsin some additional information is know but more questions are now unanswered.

John provided these two images.


As you can clearly see, this NASCAR program is from the 1968 Carolina 500 held on June 16, 1968. Inside this program is the attached ad for the Cyclone GT 500. You can clearly read the text on this ad. Prior to this we believed that the GT 500 was built for the Darlington Race in September. This ad suggests that they were built for the Carolina 500 held in Rockingham North Carolina. This makes me believe that the cars were a promotion for the Carolina 500 and not the Southern 500 in Darlington.

This would actually make more sense. The cars were all built in mid May and, as far as I have seen, all sold in or around the North and South Carolina area.

As further evidence, John also provided the following two additional items. The first is a letter from Ford to “All Mercury Dealers” and describes a Promotion held in conjunction with the Atlanta 500 held on March 31, 1968. (Remember the Cyclone GT 500s were not built until May of that year). It was part of a “Drive-Away Program where the new owners took delivery of their new Mercury Cyclones at the Atlanta 500 and got a lap around the track (see second image below).


You will note that most of these cars appear to be white with a few painted vermilion. You will also note that there were 160 cars built but they are not called GT 500s! They are called Montego or Cyclone 500s. This helps clear up some of the confusion from folks who claim to have white GT 500s and those with the 302 engine.

Now the questions get even more interesting:

  1. Does anyone have information on the Carolina 500 and a possible “Drive-Away” promotion at that race?
  2. How about anyone who has information on the Atlanta 500 program and those 160 cars?
  3. Anyone have an Atlanta 500 promotion car?
  4. Were there any other similar promotions at other race tracks that anyone has evidence of?

We may be on the track of a entirely lost or at least forgotten group of special interest cars!

You guys (and gals) are the best. You have given me more and better information than I have been able to get on any forum! Fellow car enthusiasts keep emailing and calling. With every phone call and every new email we learn a little bit more about these rare cars from 1968. Muscle Cars are a lot of fun to play with but the detective work it takes to learn about them is also a great deal of fun. Keep looking and letting me know what you find out.

As of this date I think we may have all the missing pieces. With the help of research conducted by Marti Auto Works here is the rest of the story….

  1. The cars were built for the 1968 Darlington Southern 500 held on Labor Day.
  2. As stated before there were only 60 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 cars ever built; all in 1968.
  3. They were ALL painted Vermilion. There were reports of white cars but not according to Marti.
  4. 45 cars out of the 60 built were produced with the 428 CJ engine.
  5. All 45 428 CJ cars were Ram Air equipped.
  6. All 45 428 CJ cars had automatic transmissions (C6).
  7. These cars did NOT have their own Body Code designation. Although ours only shows a “63” others all seem to have the regular “63H” code.
  8. No proof but all cars seem to have black bucket seats with console.
  9. No info on tire and wheel combination. It is assumed that any option was available that could be had on a regular GT.
  10. There was a swept back checkered flag emblem on a small pole located on the rear quarter panels.
  11. The build date on the my car is May 4, 1968. The car was sold on June 10th; most of the cars seem to be built in this window. Most likely all at the same time.
  12. It has been stated that the checkered flag cam from a 64 Comet –  part number C3MB16188A  C3MB16189A.  The part number for the 500 emblem is C8AB – 82290098 – A and it looks like a 68 Galaxy.




The following information has not been edited since it was posted. It provides a historical and chronological record of the information (true or false) as we received it.

As of 2/3/09 we now know a little more. I am still waiting on some research that the Marti Report folks are doing for me but I will give you the info I have collected from the most recent 3 car guys who have called or emailed me. One even came from out of state to talk and look at cars.Guys who have owned GT 500s as well as recorded VINs and data plates have helped put some more pieces of the puzzle together. My previous information about all the cars being 428 CJs and all identical is most certainly not true. It appears that at least a couple of the cars were white and not Vermilion (orange). The Vermilion cars that have been reported all had bucket seats in black but side stripes could be white or black. The upper stripe is not a GT stripe but rather the thinner version. It seems that advertisements for the cars showed wheel covers but many were optioned with the steel wheels, trim rings and center caps.Based on what I have been told as well as the advertisement for the car it is unlikely that any 302 cars were built. However, I have received insistent reports that more than one 302 car has been seen and validated. The official position is that the base engine was a 390 but the Q Code and R Code 428 could also had in the GT 500.

Here is what the text in the advertisement of the Race Program for the Darlington Southern 500 from 1969 has to say. Just above this text is a photo of Cale Yarborough’s Cyclone #21 followed closely by Le Roy Yarbrough’s #26:“Above are two stocks worth holding onto-good bets for the long pull. Like 500 miles flat-out at Daytona and Atlanta where track-modified Montego Cyclones finished 1-2, turning each place into a kind of outdoor showroom! If you’d like a piece of the action in a road version, we recommend our Montego Cyclone GT “500” with a list of goodies as long as your arm. A 390 GT V-8 for openers, 325 horses strong (or, for quicker effects, our 428 Cobra Jet V-8). Dual pipes, Whitewalled wide treads and GT (turbine) wheel covers. A suspension system with one of driving’s biggest handling charges. Blackout grille and taillight panel. Tinted rear window. Twin buckets in a vinyl that “breathes” to help you keep your cool. Deluxe vinyl-wrapped steering wheel. Wood-grained instrument panel and authoritative gauges. Nylon carpeting. Even the body is striped for action. you won’t miss the racing numerals. especially when you hit the road!”

Previous Information

The following information was as of 1/2/09. Finally, after six months I have some really good info on the GT 500. Thanks to Alan Miller, who owns one of these very rare cars (pictured below) I now have a much better idea of what we have. However, there are still some unanswered questions. I will bring you up to date along with what info I am still looking for.

1. The 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 was built for the 1968 Southern 500 in Darlington. As stated previously, only 60 of these cars were built and they have their own body code on the Data Plate. It was previously believed that all of them were 428 CJ cars but this was not the case.


2. The base engine was a 390 with the 428 CJ as an option.


3. I still believe that all of them were painted Vermilion (Calypso Coral) with white lower and upper stripes (the thin ones). There were additional emblems on the rear quarter panels; a 500 emblem and one checkered flag. (see photos)


4. All interiors were believed to be black with bucket seats and console but could be either 4 speed or automatic. The steering wheel should have a leather wrap and the dash should have the wood grain treatment.


5. An advertisement from the Southern 5oo program provides additional insight into the standard equipment and it can only be assumed that all regular options could be added to the car from there.



6. One very interesting bit of information I am lacking is details about the 1968 use of the 428 CJ in the Cyclones. The reference books I use only list Q, 8, or P as possible engine codes in the VIN. The 428  CJ only became available in Cyclones, Mustangs and Torinos very late in the model run and are referred to in most books as 68 1/2 models. In 1969 the R code in the VIN referred to the 428 CJ Ram Air motor in the Cyclone.

The Marti Report for our GT 500 states that our VIN with an R for the engine code in the VIN is a 428 but makes no reference to the Ram Air. Since our car was missing its engine and hood there is no way to know if it should be a Ram Air car or not. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THERE WERE ANY 1968 RAM AIR CARS BUILT?


I have what is called a 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 with a Marti Report to document what it is. The car is so far gone it is difficult to know what it is suppose to look like. The Marti Report says only 60 GT 500s were built. I have no idea what this gt 500 option included or how the car should look. Is it worth a restoration? Is the GT 500 something cool or just another stripe package?

I do know the car is an original 428 CJ so it does have some value. I have been told it was a special edition built for a NASCAR race in Charlotte and that likely all 60 were identical. It is suppose to be a GT with a GT 500 option, vermilion color, black bucket seats with console, PS, PB and AM radio. I also understand it should have some emblems on it but not sure what they should be. I have heard of two others in existence but can’t find owners or pictures of any.

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.



Here is what you folks have told me so far:

1.     Most believe that all 60 cars were identical but it has not been confirmed one way or the other.

2.     If they were all alike and based on my Marti report; they would be orange with black bucket seats and console, PS, PB, 428 with C6, AM radio and regular GT package.

3.     I have been told there was a swept back checkered flag emblem or decal on a small pole located on the rear quarter panels. It was likely pot metal type emblem chrome with black checkers. It’s very close to what was on the early sixties Marauders, knowing Ford they could be one in the same.

4.     It is believed it had a white GT stripe (lower body – rocker type)
One person states: I think the checkered flag was on the rear quarter panels with a “500? emblem, can’t remember if it was just the numbers or a block type emblem with numbers inside…for some reason the numbers only seems right, in the vicinity of the side marker light. I didn’t have my camera with me, there was actually two of them in a guys backyard in the Charlotte NC area. He was a member on a NASCAR pitcrew, Bud Moore racing team…way back in 1980.

5.     Several people remember seeing a group of these cars at a race track, likely Charlotte, for a NASCAR race. That would make sense since it was 1968 etc. Anyone have any old NASCAR programs, newspapers or other items that might show the cars?

7.     The build date on the my car is May 4, 1968; again this would work for the Memorial Day Charlotte World 600 race. The car was sold on June 10th so it could have been at the track with other similar cars. I am trying to contact the track and see if they might have any old records from back then.

8.     Hi Richard years ago i saw a 68 cyclone gt 500 , the “500” emblem is from a 68 galaxie 500 and the “flag” is from a 64 cyclone and the strips are the same as the standard cyclone gt , this is my guess from 25 years ago . Tom in Canada p.s. still have not found the book with your Dan II , i will keep looking

9.      Richard the 68 cyclone GT i saw was orange with white strips and the “flag” was before the cyclone script on the rear fender and the “500” was after the cyclone script , the tail of the flag emblem seemed to be lower and in front of the reflector under the cyclone script , this is my best guess from 25 years ago, i think there was one of these cars on ebay 4 or 5 years ago ?

  1. Joe, I think that is probably the answer. When I gave Ford the VIN for 3 of my 69 Talladegas they told me they were Mustangs. I said no, and they went back through their records and said the what I had were definely Mustangs! I may be slow but I know the difference between a Mustang and a Talladega. I know a guy with inside connections to Ford and he convinced them what the difference was. It seems some junior data entry clerk just entered some bogus data somewhere along the line. No one knows the entire story but there are lots of good folks out there willing to help. That’s one of the things that makes this hobby fun.

  2. Yupppppppppppppp… I agree. I have not got Marti reports as of yet. I do need them but I like you guys, really dont want to know I have three Pintos on my hands. They can Marti reports that is, be incorrect on somethings and dead on on others. But really guys you got to admit Ford was all screwed up back them. Anything on the shelf as they came down the line went on to some car. You just did not know what it was going to be. Thirty cars at a Gallaxy rally and they are differant. And did not Ford start the mid-year production stuff? They did it before anyone else (I think) and they still do it …and have for years. But I have never, ever, seen a 68 Cyclone or Torino with true ram-air. And thats a Fact….. How ever guys put flaper lid air cleaners on there 1968s. BUT there is no hole in the hood nor are they factory installed parts in 68. Rod

  3. March 25th… Mercurydj428 post a weird one. About the vin being changed from an F to a R or something. 01/d/68 first day production Cyclone CJ car, my fifth digit is about half again larger in size then all the rest of the vin numbers. Someone is pulling someones leg here if a vin is altered its altered. I dont buy that one at all. It looks like they did not even have the right size R to stamp my vin on the door and dash tag. Or they just stamped it very large and very proudly…LOL. He better check on that one out. And the rivets too…LOL. Rod

  4. I think we can all agree on one fact, ALL RPO, CJ Mustangs came with Ram Air from the factory. There were NO 1968 Torino’s that came with the same configuration from the factory. 1969 was the first year FoMoCo offered Ram Air in the Torino/Cyclone/Fairlane/Montego line. Unless someone has documentation proving otherwise, I say we agree. Any opinion’s?

  5. Rod, It may sound weird but I have a 68 R code and it too is made from an F code! Ford did weird things. It is done by hand. The door data plate is stamped, the fender numbers are also hand engraved. Can some of you other 68 R code Cyclone folks vouch for the way Ford did the “R” code Cyclones? Oh yes, the title and the Marti Report confirm that the vin is an “R” code.

  6. Thats weird….just weird. What is the date of production of your car? Day and month?. I would like to know what MercuryJD’s date of production is too. Just to see how close your the production date of these cars really was! And yes……And yes I agree, there were NO 1968 Torino’s or Cyclone’s that came with the same configuration from the factory. 1969 was the first year Ford offered Ram Air in the Torino/Cyclone/Fairlane/Montego line. Like I said some claim to have had a Ram Air Lid come on their car Factory. But NO, it did not in 1968. And as for the Marti reports… Yes, I got to get them on my cars! But man are those expensive or what. I just bought the stripes for my green car, 3-m paper, gold reflective, nice as close to factory as you get, actally even better than. And they where cheaper than a good Deluxe Marti Report! I guess they are gold too. LOL

  7. Rod, the production date on my car is 5/4/68 and the others that have supplied dates are all within days if not the same date. The vins are also within single or at most double digits of each other. Now, understand I am talking about GT 500s not just 428 cj GTs. I also don’t have but a few numbers but it is a start. The Deluxe Report is worth the money if you have anything half way rare. If you think that is expensive ask them to do research through their files for you.

  8. I have a Marti or two on ’68 CJ Cyclones. They are the Deluxe version with the production figures. I think they’re $45 or so?

  9. Thanks Joe and all you guys, I thought it was alot more than just $46.00 each. I just ordered reports on all three of my Cyclones, done deal. I have never seen a factory double stamped vin #. You guys have got to e-mail some pictures really, I want to see this. Don’t think that I don’t belive you, because I do. But I want to see what to look for! I’ll find one soon, trust me, as I live in Montana. I have had allot of Torino’s and Cyclones, mostly 68’s some 69’s. All fastbacks, most big blocks. I kept just the three I got now. But I have a 850hp twin turboed 95 Mustang. She…is ….a beauty. And a bit challenging at times, but Iam still learning to drive it! LOL

  12. FYI, the Deluxe report is $46, the Elite report is $220. The more expensive obviously comes with more detail, along with a copy of the original invoice and key dates. Like any intelligent business person, if you have what others want, you charge accordingly. Personally, I think the prices are fair. Where else can one obtain this info? I also agree with Rod regarding the pictures of the over stamped VIN on the F to R coded car’s. We all know what they say a picture is worth!

    As a side note, I have no connection with Kevin Marti other then having purchased several reports.

  13. No Phil, not as of right now. They e-mailed me the other day, and said I have to send Pictures of my vin numbers back to them. My 1st e-mail from them, said there was no such vin #. This is the West Coast Car. Pretty and a Rare car. I think! “Getting painted now!” Then a 10 rpm. roller rockered, duel quad, gear drive, 428 CJ motor! CAN YOU HERE ME NOW MOTOR! Nos everything, but Grill and front hood chrome. Need it!, can you help me out?

Hi Richard,went to our local car show last night in West Columbia and what did I see?I saw a 68 Cyclone sitting on a trailer for sale.I started looking it over and man was it rough.I thought I don’t need another pile of junk so I asked the guy is there an engine in it and he says yes it’s got a 428.I said what,he said it’s got the original 428 in it.I didn’t see the 428 badges on the fender until I really started looking.I checked the numbers and everything matched so I ended up buying it on the spot.It’s rough but everything is there but the aircleaner,exhaust manifolds and radiator.It’s not a 500 but it is a 428 car.I’ll send you some photos shortly.The numbers are 8H15R618419 63H W 8A 18U 21 H U.I got it a lot cheaper than I thought I would.I sent my wife to get the money before someone else bought it.It’s rough but I’m happy.

  21. Hi guys, I got my Marti Report on my White Cyclone! Scheduled build date of 01/D, April Fools day. Built on 4/03/68. 988 in polar white. Lorian plant. One of “173” in 68, produced with CJ Engine/ Trany Code. This is just the deluxe report, iam going to get it all soon!

  23. Joe, If you are asking about the white Cyclone that is shown on the drag strip and in other photos it is believed to be a white GT 5oo. The owner was the second and purchased it early in its life but has no paper work to confirm it as a real GT 500. I have seen photos of what are reported to be white GT 500 cars at the Atlanta Speedway but this car was sold new in California. If anyone can help verify the existance of white GT 500 promotional cars from 1968 it would be appreciated.

  24. hi i have a 1968 cyclone in 1968 my book i purchased said no dealer in 1968 in this country sold a 428 cobra jet .it was optioned none were ordered .and a little over 300 were ordered with 390 gt thanks but we all you cant always beleive what you read

  25. Darrin, good point on the don’t believe everything you read. I almost always look for 2 sources on any information that seems a little off track. However, this will somewhat depend on the source of the info but as I have found out even info straight from the manufacturer is not always correct. As you know, there certainly were 428 cj Ford products produced in 1968.

  26. I went to the Darlington Historic Racing Festival yesterday.A guy had a white Cyclone 500 with original paint.It was a 302 car but he installed a 351, nine inch rear,some 21 decals,and other racing decals.I can send photos of the show if you want to post them. There are about 170 photos.

  27. Now wait….. 1968 April Fools day was the 1st day the 428 CJ was put in to any 1968 car, Iam sure Iam right. Some have claimed to have this huge option but does anyone have solid paper proof of such an option BEFORE 01/D/1968?. Proof real proof. I have 1st day production 68 Cyclone. 428 CJ non-ram air car. 01/D. All where Non Ram air in 1968. And it was not manufactured until APRIL 3rd. And I have the Marty Report on this car to prove so! And I have two more 1968 428 CJ Cyclone cars! All Factory. Ford plant was slow putting the FIRST CJ cars together, FACT. Some like to claim real rare, and we have all seen that before. I also thought 500 production cars have to be sold first to the public, so that the factory can race that body style? It has to be a actule production car. Am I right here? Rod

  28. Rod, I am not sure on the first day the 428 CJ went into the Cyclone/Torino body. However, as it impacts the use of the car on the track has no revelance. NASCAR did require 500 cars be built prior to being able to hit the track but that was not a problem. All that was required was that 500 Torino or Cyclone fastback (sportback) bodies be built. They did not have to have the 428 cj engines. NASCAR required the body and the engine to meet the 500 requirement but had no requirement that the engine and body be in the same car. Remember in 1969 the Ford Talladega was produced with the 428 CJ engine and the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II was sent out of the factory with a 351 but both raced with a Boss 429 engine. What production car got the
    Boss? The Mustang! Hope that answers part of your question.

  29. Could it just be that Mercury wanted to compete with the GT 500 Mustang from Shelby…. so it was a case of adding badges and adding a name.. You now have a 68 Mercury Cyclone GT500..Ford Marketing do it today so why not back then.

  30. I am unsure how one arrives at the conclusion that a regional promotion signified competition for a corporate cousin. Isn’t it almost obvious that Mercury’s success in NASCAR was being used to sell cars?

  31. i have a 63 mercury monterey custom breeze way, it is a factory mess up!!! extremely great shape barn find. it was supposed to be a two door breeze way, but is a 4 door breeze way,i know its not a cyclone, but were talking about factory mess ups too, sold out of the atlanta district also. axle code is one, 3:50, one tire fire, and transmission vin is 4, fmx. standard 390 sbbl. can any one find out why this is a mess up??? thanx, bryan

  32. Hello and THANK YOU! I have been seeking information for years as I own a 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT hardtop, not fastback… optioned with the 302 and buckets. Simply a GT without the “500”. I contacted FoMoCo many years ago in hopes to find out more information and had much difficulty in getting results. I was told it is 1 of 334 optioned as such but very little more and hopefully your site will lead me to finding out just exactly what Cyclone I bought in high school. I have just begun reading the information you have compiled, but wanted to add a comment right away… I am tickled!!!

    Thank you for your comment. The very best things you can do right now to get quick info are to:
    1. look for your build sheet; most likely under the front or under or behind the rear seat.
    2. Get a Marti Report; go to http://www.martiauto.com.
    3. Get the info off your data plate on the driver’s door and decode it. You can purchase a decode book or simply seed us the info in an email and we will do it for you, no cost.

    I hate to be a bubble burster but the base engine in a 68 Cyclone was the 302-2V. Optional was the 390, 2V or 4V and late in production, the mighty 428CJ. Although mentioned in early literature, the 427 was never actually built for the public in the Cyclone. You still own a unique vehicle.


  35. rcode, you are absolutely wrong. The 428 CJ was available late in 1968 in the Cyclone. This has been documented both by the Marti-Report and Ford Motor Company. What more proof do you need?

  36. Ok …. I have the first 428 CJ car off the line. And “YES I DO” it was scheduled to be built April Fools day 1968. Buy My Marti Report; It was not actually built till APRIL 3rd 1968. First built car … 68 Cyclone Fastback, 428CJ. One of three hand delivered to yes..Mr Cale Yarborough himself! On the 5th day of April. Have original title too! Door code is 01-D 1968 = April Fools day car. Mid year change April Fools Day 1st day production for the 428 Cobra Jet engine Period. Fact. True. NO EARLY 428 CJS EVER INSTALED ANY EARLIER IN ANY CAR … THIS IS FACT. Everyone wants rare like in big block CJ. But most really are not so rare small block. Maybe these cars are rare, I don’t know for sure. But R Code means 428 CJ and I have seen some Q coded 428 CJ cars. My 5th digitin my vin# – the R is stamped huge, way larger then all the rest of the vin#s. They where proud of it! And I still think they did not know how to really stamp it. Try this guys I sold a 1968 427 Cougar all factory car. Maybe some had the 427 in it???? LOL………………

  37. Oh ya…. And the 390 is a good one too…. I also have 3 1968 428 CJ Fastback Cyclones. All automatics. And a 1968 Torino GT 390 4 speed car. Iam not a show off expert, but you better not bet your ass! Because I do know these 1968 cars!

  38. I don’t see what the problem is with R-code’s comments, as they are 110% correct.

    The only 427 car built in 1968, according to Marti, is the Cougar GT-E.
