1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 – More is Learned
As many of you know Katrina and I have a 1968 Mercury Cyclone GT 500 of which only 60 were ever manufactured. Since I got the Marti Report and it brought to my attention that this was not your ordinary Cyclone I have been trying to figure out what the heck it is.
Finally after six months I have some really good info on the GT 500. Thanks to Alan Miller, who also owns one of these very rare cars (pictured above), I now have a much better idea of what I have. However, there are still some unanswered questions.

I believe I have one of these cars. I picked up a 68 cyclone when I was in high school and restored it. On the rear quarter I there were hols that I had no emblems for and had no idea what went in them until I read this article. Some of the things do not match to what is said in the article though. The holes in the quarter panel are definetly the same to which the 500 and the flag would go into. Is there a site to go to where I could orders these emblems?
Jeff, there is no place that I know of that you can order GT 500 emblems. However, they are the same as used on other Ford products over the years. You simply purchase the required emblem for that model for your GT 500.
One of these cars appeared in Butler county, KY in the mid 80’s. I tracked down the owner and became friends. I helped him replace the 302/C4 with the correct 390GT/4speed. He later sold the car to some high school kid in Warren county, Ky. This kid tracked me down to get some parts and later he and a friend broke into my garage and stole some of the parts I had showed him. A neighboring business man witnessed the break-in, got a license plate # and called police. I followed up and the police report said “no suspects”. File that one under “stupid cops”.

Tom, These are very difficult items to find. I am looking for a hood trim myself. Your best bet, if you have old pieces, is to have them straightened professionally and polished. You might also try putting a “Wanted” ad on our Free Classified section of this web site.
