Seldom have I been as excited at a car show as I was when the first cars started their engines and began to move under their own power. There was the thump of the hand cranked first Cadillac concept car ever built. Then there was Sam Posey’s 1970 Trans Am Challenger race car that made the entire show field shake. The most remarkable was a turbine powered car. I stepped behind it as it passed and the sound and thrust from the exhaust was like a quiet jet aircraft taxing on the runway. Oh, and then there is the Smokey Yunick Indy Car! Arguably, the wildest is the propeller driven car, airplane without wings!

What goes with fast cars better than great rock and roll and beautiful girls? For now, the girls are your job but we are going to bring you some of the best music around from when your muscle car was on the street. We will post a new music video in the column to the right about once a week or two.

However, we want to give you a bonus, check this video of The Chantay’s and their hit Pipeline! This is from 1963 on the Lawrence Welk Show. I know, my parents watched it and I couldn’t stand it either but I might have if I knew they had acts like this on.

This video shows you what it was really like to be a new, young, hot band in 1963.

The video below is a small example of the competition at the recent Nashville Good Guys event. This is all part of the movement away from perfect trailer queens and more to the drive it like you stole it end of the spectrum. Agree or disagree, it is fun to watch a muscle car or hot rod do what it was intended for, go fast.

What is it?

This is a 1969 427 ZL-1 COPO Camaro from the Ciff Ernst Collection. You can see the complete collection on our Museum Page. This is car number 60 out of only 69 built. I is painted Fathom Green with a Black interior.

The COPO Package included the all aluminum 427 430 HP engine, ZL-2 Ducted Hood Assembly, Heavy Duty Radiator, Transistor Ignition, 12 bolt 4.10 Posi and optional M-22 HD Transmission.

This option package added approximately $4,500 to the base car! No wonder there were only 69 built.

We have just posted another terrific Feature Car. This one is owned by Barry Miller and is an actual 1968/1969 Holman and Moody.

It was the Pole Winner at Daytona in February 1968 at a speed of 179.459 MPH. It led the ARCA 300 for 25 laps until crashing and finishing 22nd. It was one of tow Torinos that won eleven races that year.

We photographed this car at the Monster Mopar Weekend in St. Louis during the 2008 event. Certain Fords were allowed to participate as part of the Winged Car (Daytona and Superbird Club activities).The is not pristine with immaculate paint and body but it is beautiful. The 427 sounds terrific (watch the video and listen for yourself) and the pure rawness of the race car makes you quiver. Unlike today, the race cars were not massaged to a silky smooth finish. When they started a race they often carried the scars of the previous race. You have to remember that in those days there were a lot more races and some of the drivers would compete in multiple events during a weekend. There was no time to do minor body work and repaint. These were race cars and not show cars.

We just put up a new Feature Car that is very special. It is a tribute to NASCAR legend, Benny Parsons. The video below will give you an idea of what you will see on the Feature Car page. It is a Boss 429 powered street car built for the race track by Rick D. Stanton. It is a beautiful car and something very different. It has even been featured in Hot Rod Magazine.

If you like NASCAR racing; if you like vintage auto racing; if you like the winged 1969 Dodge Daytona or the 1970 Plymouth Superbird or if you are more into the 1969 Ford Talladega or Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II you have to join the Daytona Superbird Auto Club (DSAC). Katina and I belong and recently attended the Club’s 34^th annual Aero Warrior Reunion at Gateway International Raceway in St Louis. The Reunion was held in conjunction with the Monster Mopar Weekend.

If you think Mopar owners and Blue Oval folks get along like oil and water you are badly mistaken. In fact we all had a great time together and have nothing but the highest regard for each others cars. In fact some of us own both brands or at least have owned both in the past.

The weather was not the best. The temperature was terrific but the rain was a constant threat and sometimes made good on the threat with little showers. However, nothing dampened the spirits of those in attendance. The cars were polished and driven.

We even got to take laps of the Gateway International Speedway on both Saturday and Sunday.

If you seldom see one of these rare cars this was your opportunity. There were 36 Mopar Aero cars and 9 Blue Oval cars in attendance. Everything from non-restored but well used originals too pristine show cars too authentic race cars. I have seldom had so much fun at a car event.

I have included some photos to wet your appetite but if you go to our On Tour page you can see a lot more. I will also be doing Feature Car articles on several of my favorites over the next few months so keep checking back.

If you would like to join DSAC or learn more about it check out their web page or give Doug Schellinger a call at 414-687-2489. The 40^th Reunion should be the best yet. It will be held at Talladega Speedway during the 2009 NASCAR race in November. The dates are October 28 thru November 1, 2009. If all goes as planned we will be there with all three of our Blue Oval Aero Cars. If we win the Lottery we will also have a Superbird and Daytona by then! Look for us!
