As with most things you read, it is not 100% factually correct but that is half the fun of getting this kind of stuff. You have to sift through the bad info to get to the good stuff. This is also how rummors get started that take on a life of their own.

We like what the previous owner did to the car during its seven year restoration but it does not provide the true picture of what a new Talladega should look like. We are soon going to be going to the 40th Aero Car reunion in Talladega during the NASCAR Cup race and will be doing a parade lap of the Super Speedway just prior to the race.

What better time to give our favorite car a little refreshing? What better place to take it than Mark Stacey Restorations just outside our hometown of Murfreesboro, Tennessee?

The car didn’t need much but we wanted to take the hood and rear tail light panel back to the original dull competition black paint rather than the current gloss black. We also wanted to make the excellent paint job shine a little brighter so decided to have it wet sanded and buffed to perfection. We also added the black stripes that go over the top of the fenders and doors.

The tires and wheels are beautiful on the car but are considered dealer installed options that the factory should have installed on the car but didn’t. The Blue Oval guys decided whitewalls on steel wheels would be the way all Talladegas would leave the factory. For this event and some of the other show duties the car will see we are installing a set of original style wheels but will use BFG White Letter radials to help make the driving chores a little safer. We debated using the correct style pollyglass whitewalls but just don’t thing the whitewall thing is appropriate for a Total Performace car look and besides pollyglass tires are junk on the road. We will also keep the current wheels and tires for the local cruise seen and other fun activities (we just like the way they look way better than Ford’s production style)

What is it?

This is a 1969 427 ZL-1 COPO Camaro from the Ciff Ernst Collection. You can see the complete collection on our Museum Page. This is car number 60 out of only 69 built. I is painted Fathom Green with a Black interior.

The COPO Package included the all aluminum 427 430 HP engine, ZL-2 Ducted Hood Assembly, Heavy Duty Radiator, Transistor Ignition, 12 bolt 4.10 Posi and optional M-22 HD Transmission.

This option package added approximately $4,500 to the base car! No wonder there were only 69 built.

On another subject; do you like to read for sale ads in the newspaper? I do. I go through cycles of reading them every day when I think I want a particular car or just want to see what the market is doing.

I was recently reading the for sale ads in the local paper to see if there was something I just could not live without and I spotted the following ad. It did not sound like anything I was interested in but it sure did remind me of when I was much younger and had different priorities.

I remember when it was more important to have a new set of Baby Moon hub caps than it was to have a good set of tires. I remember when I just had to get the seats redone instead of fixing the floor the seats were sitting on!

This fellow obviously felt it was much more important to have good tunes for his car than to be able to drive it!

This is a rendering for the never built 1971 2-seat AMX. In 1971 AMC decided to do a “Thunderbird” on the AMX and make it a four seater. Unfortunately, it was simply nothing more than an optioned Javelin.

Trust me, when you purchase a restoration guide do not sit down in front of fire in the fireplace on a cold winter evening. It works faster than a speeding sleeping pill.

This guide is one of the better ones I have read. It still isn’t something you pick up to escape from reality but when you are in the car mood but don’t want to work in the garage this is a good substitute. It is the Camaro Restoration Guide 1967-1969 by Motorbooks and written by Jason Scott. He claims to be little more than “an avid Camaro enthusiast.” Based on this book that is like calling an Olympic Gold Medalist a couch potato.

If you have not yet purchased your Camaro, Chapter 2 is worth the $29.95 list price of the book. It is chuck full of codes, data and info on how to read all the various identification plates on the cars. If you have ever looked at a car you were interested in purchasing and weren’t sure if it was a clone or real you know what I mean. Best advice, do your homework before you start to look. This book will even tell suggest trouble areas for you to look for on the Camaro.

This restoration guide is much better produced that a lot of them I have read. There are amble photos and diagrams but best of all they are clear and legible. Much better quality although they are still in black and white. I much prefer color photos which are much easier to identify and color is important when restoring under the hood.

If you have a 1967-1969 Camaro, buy this book. I just wish they had something this good for our odd ball Fords! If you don’t own a Camaro but want one, buy this book. If you don’t own a Camaro, don’t want one, why are you reading this?
