We have previously told you about the red prototype now here are a few pics of the White Banjo Matthews Prototype Talladega. The father son restoration duo of Jason and Clarence Thompson weren’t satisfied with just one prototype from the Banjo Matthews collection, they wanted both and now that is just what they have! Jason just recently purchased this car from Banjo’s son.

This is just what it looked like when Jason got it but after he placed it in the museum. You will notice the rocker moulding, rear checker board, chrome remote driver side mirror, bucket seats, console, rim blow steering wheel and A/C. There are more detail changes but lets see how good you are at finding them! If you find additional things you think are different from the production Talladega list it in the comments below.

Jason brought the car from Ashville, to Floyd’s Museum but hasn’t yet had a chance to really check it out. It had been parked since approximately 1989.

There is very little known about the history of these cars. If anyone has any information, printed materials or worked on these cars when they were built leave a comment below and we will pass it on to Jason. It is planned that both Banjo Matthews cars will be at the Forge Muscle Car Show in Kingsport, TN this October 1 and 2. You will definitely not want to miss these or the other terrific Talladega and Mercury Spoiler cars that will be on display for the Talladega Family Reunion.

We have some other related big stories coming next week on these and related cars so keep watching you won’t want to miss them.

Now we have even more info. The owners, Jason and Clarence Thompson, have provided us with a few new pics of the Banjo car during it current restoration. You can start to see some of the prototype differences even at this early stage of the restoration.

You can see that they have left all the original paint on the rocker panels. Jason said that the modification of the rocker panels was so weird that they left the original paint on them so everyone can see exactly how they were done. The rockers were pop riveted, and tack welded with brass in a few spots on the driver’s side and just pop riveted on the passenger’s side. Possibly the factory either had different people building each side, or they learned what was and wasn’t necessary from one side to the other. They covered all of this work with rocker molding, so none of the modifications would be visible when the car was completed. The restoration will include a provision to make the rocker panels removable at shows so people can see how it was done.

The Talladega as it appeared in magazines back in the day!

You can also see how they extended the headlights, and grill. Its pretty neat how they did things.

This car was built in Lorain, Ohio and the floor of this car was done with red oxide primer. There is also some red paint and black over spray. The father/son restoration team has all of that done, and are now working on the rest of the body work. They hope to get some paint on the car soon.

As some of you may know there was not just one Banjo Matthew prototype Talladega, there were two. One was red, this one, and one was white. You will see that one coming up next!

This thunderbolt was owned and driven by John Donilson in 1964-1965. He died in this car at Union Hill when he went off the end of the track and down the hill. He had taken the front seats out and replaced the driver’s seat with an aluminum folding chair!

We have also added another update to the Murfreesboro Hot Rod Cruise Photos.

We had a terrific time at the most recent cruise put on by the Murfreesboro Hot Rod Club on the 4th of July weekend. I am not sure how many cars were there but all of the parking spaces seemed to be filled and the isles were full of families walking around and enjoying all the beautiful cars and friendly folks on this Holiday Weekend.

I thought all you might enjoy this video. Now, for all you US gear heads remember they drive on the “wrong” side of the road down there. The first time I saw this I had to do a double take when the cars started coming on the wrong side of the road.

We just attended our first real car cruise of the year. The weather was great and the new rides were all terrific. We live in Murfreesboro Tennessee home of the Murfreesboro Hot Rod Club and they put on a great cruise. Every Friday night cars from all over middle Tennessee and parts beyond meet at Murfreesboro’s the Avenue Shopping Mall just off of I-24 south of Nashville and show their stuff.

Even better than the cars are the people. Car people are terrific but this cruise brings out the best in folks. You will find regulars with their chairs and food as well as new comers rushing from car to car to take it all in. Everyone is in a great mood and talking cars.

Wow, it is great to be back in car season!

One example of that is Robert Pegler of New Zealand. Robert and I first met through this web site. Last summer he made one of his regular trips to the US and found time to stop by and visit with us and check out some of our cars on his way to the Daytona/Superbird and Talladega 40th Reunion at Talladega Speedway.

On his return to New Zealand (with a couple of new American cars in tow) he remained in touch and even provided photos of what the car culture in New Zealand is like.

One of his favorite shows for the Kiwi car lovers is the Beach Hop held every year in Whangamata! (Sounds like a great name for a big hamburger!)

They just held their 10th anniversary event in late March of 2010. Remember the Kiwis are on the other side of the planet so just as most of us are beginning to celebrate spring they are just going into the fall season down under.

The event has a number of different car shows going on at the same time in different locations with all venues connected by free bus service. The cars are all American and of top quality; everything from hot rods to muscle cars. The Festival is not limited to cars. It also features Rock and Roll bands and motorcycles. For the past couple of years they have had some of Australia’s top bands perform at the Beach Hop.

One of the biggest draws each year is the car give-a-way. Last year they gave 3 Mustangs away. This year they had a Hot Rod, Motorcycle and a custom Buick Station wagon.

This is the Hot Rod they gave away in 2010!

This Hop at the Beach is sponsored by many of the same car related companies we have right here in the States as well as some local New Zealand car fanatics. I don’t know how many cars showed up for this year’s event but in 2008 they had a reported 1,300 plus cars!

If Katrina and I ever go “down under” this is an event we will try to take in!

If you would like to know more about the Beach Hop check out their web site at www.beachhop.co.nz. If you really want to get into the spirit check out this video. This reminds me so much of attending the annual Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino CA!

Seeing these beautiful works of art start their engines and drive through the crowd is enough to make you act like a school kid!

Seldom have I been as excited at a car show as I was when the first cars started their engines and began to move under their own power. There was the thump of the hand cranked first Cadillac concept car ever built. Then there was Sam Posey’s 1970 Trans Am Challenger race car that made the entire show field shake. The most remarkable was a turbine powered car. I stepped behind it as it passed and the sound and thrust from the exhaust was like a quiet jet aircraft taxing on the runway. Oh, and then there is the Smokey Yunick Indy Car! Arguably, the wildest is the propeller driven car, airplane without wings!

The video below has all this and much more. What is your favorite?

This is not where you want to be standing when this turbine powered machine fires up!

On October 1 and 2 of 2010 we will have the first ever reunion of some of the rarest production cars ever built. The Tim Lopata Forge Muscle Car Show will be featuring the Ford Talladega and its cousin the Mercury Spoiler II this year.

A while back we showed you the red Banjo Matthews prototype Talladega that is now undergoing a complete restoration. It is going to be there restored or in what ever stage it might be in at the time!

When was the last time you saw the first production car off the assembly line? When was the last time you saw the last production car off the assembly line? I bet you have never seen both at the same time! Well at the Forge Muscle Car Show you will have the opportunity to see the very first regular production Talladega off the assembly line and the very last production Talladega off the assembly line! I would think that has to be the first for any show.

We will save the last Talladega for another post but for this one how about the first?

The photos shown in this post are of the car prior to our putting it back to its original appearance, to see how it looks now CLICK HERE.

This is actually our Talladega. It was scheduled to be built on January 21, 1969 but was delayed until January 22, 1969. It was sold new to D. E. Brown at Tower Ford, Inc. in Baltimore, MD on April 15, 1969. According to some of the history we have been able to put together it later went to an auto auction in Darlington South Carolina. It was then purchased by Annie Haire of Mc Bee SC on June 6, 1973. As we understand it, there may have been some street racing going on during this time.

Michael Ratterree purchase the car for parts in January of 1989. Luckily, he soon realize what he had purchased and began a long, extensive and high quality restoration. The car was restored to be a driver and not to concours standards. He took a few liberties along the way with tires and wheels, interior and hood treatment. The biggest difference being the gloss black rather than the correct competition black on the hood and rear tail light panel. The restoration took him 7 years.

Katrina and I purchase the car in October 2007 and began to take it back to a more factory look.

This photo was taken during the filming of the “Flash Back” feature for Muscle Car TV. You can see this episode by CLICKING HERE.

Although there will be some great muscle cars on the inside at the Forge Muscle Car Show you are invited to bring you Talladega or Spoiler II and display it in the outside display. Contact Jason at thompsons122@charter.net for more details. See you at the Reunion.

Making this event even more special is the attendance of the some of the people responsible for the development and building of these very special cars. Each will bring their own expertise, stories and rumors to the show for all to share.

Between now and the show we will be making regular announcements as to cars and individuals who have registered to attend this one time only event.

This show within the Forge Muscle Car Show will be one you will not want to miss. Again this is a once in lifetime opportunity to see some of these cars gathered in one place. Some of these cars are restored, while others are in the process, and others in original condition.

We live in the City of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, home of the Stones River Civil War Battlefield. As we begin this new year and new decade take one brief minute to remember the trials and tribulations that make it possible for us to live the lives we do. We, as citizens of this great Country, may not always agree but may we always remember the price that must be paid for freedom.

After General Braxton Bragg’s defeat at Perryville, Kentucky, October 8, 1862, he and his Confederate Army of the Mississippi retreated, reorganized, and were redesignated as the Army of Tennessee. They then advanced to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and prepared to go into winter quarters.

Murfreesboro, TN was an important strategic location for both sides. The city is situated on the railroad to Chattanooga, thirty miles southeast of Nashville. Extending from every direction from the town are numerous turnpikes. Stone’s River–named after an early settler flows through the city. The Nashville Railroad crosses the river as well as the Nashville turnpike. Open fields surrounded the town, fringed with dense cedar trees. These afforded excellent cover for approaching infantry.

Major General William S. Rosecrans’s Union Army of the Cumberland followed Bragg from Kentucky with about 45,000 men. On Dec. 31, 1862, the two armies faced each other just west of the Stones River (Murfreesboro, TN). At dawn on the 31st, Bragg’s men attacked the Union right flank and had the upper end of the battle until Union reinforcements arrived and pushed the Confederates back. On New Years Day, both armies marked time. Bragg surmised that Rosecrans would now withdraw, however, the next morning he was still in position. In late afternoon, Bragg hurled a division at a Union division that had crossed the Stones River. With the assistance of artillery, the Federals repulsed the attack. The Confederates claimed the Stones River as a tactical victory. However, from a strategic viewpoint, the campaign was a Confederate failure.

The Confederates lost 11,739 out of 34,739 engaged ranking this battle #8 as one of the costliest battles of the Civil War. The Rebels retired to their original position. Bragg left the field on January 4-5, retreating to southern Tennessee (Shelbyville and Tullahoma). Rosecrans did not pursue, but as the Confederates retired, he claimed the victory. Stones River boosted Union morale and proved to be a turning point for the Union.

The Stones River Battlefield of Murfreesboro, TN is now a National Park preserving the sacred battlefield grounds and telling the story. Each year, actors recreate the camp for the Union and Confederates, fire off period correct artillery and tell the stories of the Battle of Stones River.

Having a Collector Car means hitting the road and having fun with it. Think about heading to Murfreesboro, TN and visiting the National Stones River Civil War Battlefield.

Pops was a hard worker, a good business man and car guy. After a hard day of work he would take his Boss 429 Cammer out to the streets to have some fun. It must run in the family gene pool because that Boss Cammer has since generated some additional and equally spectacular Boskovich Blue Oval machinery.

I could not visit the entire collection, it is not house at one location and I was short on time. Grandson Rhett Searcy did the honor and I still get a wide smile on my face every time I think back on that day; and I think back often. Friend, Rick Stanton (Boss 429 Talladega Feature Car on this site), and I were breathless as we walked between the collection of multiple Boss 429s, a Cobra, a 68 428 CJ Mustang, Shelbys, a 427 Ace Cobra continuation car as well as a multitude of Shelby experimentals.

While we were at the Aero Car Reunion in Alexander City we saw a lot of old friends and met lots of new ones. One such meeting was way more entertaining than the others.

Katrina and I went to the Sonic next to Tim Wellborn’s Muscle Car Museum for lunch one day. Because all of the car folks were hanging out there, no one was ordering from their car. Everyone was up on the patio and all orders were being placed by the big intercom speaker menus. We have a Sonic back home and are very familiar with the way they work; read the menu, push the button and wait for the person on the other end to ask you what you want, you tell them, they give you the total and you can either pay by credit card or cash to the carhop when she comes to deliver your food.

We did just that with the intent to pay the carhop with cash. There was a long line waiting to use the electronic menu but we did not think much about it.

The food came and I tried to pay the carhop but she kept saying you paid with a credit card; I said I don’t want to use a credit card I just want to pay with cash. The banter went on for a while and she started to walk off when I heard someone at the table next to us say, “I think that’s our food!”

I said, “No it is just what we ordered.” They said, “But we paid for it!”

It seems they walked up to the intercom menu board immediately after us and it said “insert credit card” so they did. The board then put our bill on there card and said thank you!

They had no idea what they paid for put quietly sat down and waited. When our food arrived they figured out what it was they had paid for!

I paid them back and we all had a good laugh. Every time we bumped into them during the reunion I would ask them if they wanted to buy us lunch again.

I will be more careful at Sonic from now on.

If you like to look at cars in their un-natural environment of the forest or pasture then check out our Barn Find page. In addition to some AMX rust buckets and dusty old Cadillacs you will find over 35 Chevelles sitting in a yard rusting away. Don’t ask where any of these cars are; some are still there but others have already been sold.

If you would like to contribute some “Barn Find” photos we would appreciate having them and will give you photo credit.

The Dodge Daytons, Plymouth Superbirds, Ford Talladegas, Charger 500s and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler IIs all got their chance to recreate that magical time back in 1969 when Stock Cars were Stock Cars and race drives had to drive the cars even on the speedways.

We were not allowed to open em up and fly around the banking but the sheer experience of being able to once again bring these cars to Talladega was amazing. Actually, going around the high bankings at parade speed gave us all an opportunity to appreciate what the track really is and how gigantic the turns really are.

During the 2009 Aero Car Reunion these Mopar collectors made even us humble Ford collectors feel special. The Wellborn Estate, known as Russwood, is a treasure in its own right but when you add some of Tim and Pam’s cars along with all the visiting Aero Cars it is truly a place like no other.

We started early in the afternoon and went well into the evening for our first day of the Reunion. There were wonderful cars parked all over the grounds of Russwood as well as the multiple garages of cars belonging to the Wellborns. There was a tour of their home, the garages, freedom to explore the acres of landscape and a constant flow of arriving Aero Car owners and their wonderful machines. If you would like to see more on this day’s events just Click Here.

Well, that is just what happened last week in Alexander City Alabama when we all pulled into town for the Daytona Superbird Auto Club Aero Car Annual Reunion.

I am not sure how many of these vintage Winged Warriors from NASCAR’s Aero Wars days were at the event. There were different cars at each activity; some made it to all and others only went to one or two. At one point I counted well over 100 cars and more were still coming.

It appeared by my estimate that there were approximately 30 of the Ford products in attendance and possibly 100 Mopar products.

The owners of these cars are without a doubt some of the best car people around. It doesn’t matter if they have the most expensive Hemi Daytona or a street condition Mercury they are all genuinely nice car nuts. Best of all, most are not afraid to drive them.

We toured a couple of days from our host city of Alexander City Alabama to the Talladega Super Speedway. The site of all those winged Mopars and sloped nose fastback Fords was a unbelievable. It must have been a real once in a lifetime site for some of those small town folks living on our route based on some of the looks on their faces when we passed by!

Over the next few days and weeks we will bring you some great stories; the reunion of Katrina and a car she once owned; a reunion of a winged race car and a boy who watched it race nearly 40 years ago when he was only 10; photos of two Ford racing prototypes from 1970; a Talladega signature car once owned by Bill France; a preview of a wonderful new Mopar Museum opening after the first of the year and much, much more.

Thank you to all you regular readers of the site who took the time to come up and say hello. Katrina and I really appreciate it when you let us know how much you enjoy the site.

We are off to the 40th Reunion of the NASCAR Aero cars this weekend at the Talladega Super Speedway. This reunion is only held once every five years at the Speedway. It is a great group of people who all love the Aero cars. Most don’t care if you own a Blue Oval or a Mopar, they just treasure the cars. This year the Club has put together a great series of events. As always, owners will be driving these rare cars not just showing them. There will be no judged show but they will be on display one day at the Speedway. There will also be a tour of a high quality Mopar car collection as well as a tour of the museum at the Speedway. A couple of NASCAR races are also on the schedule. The highlight of the weekend for many will be our Parade Lap of Talladega Speedway just prior to the NASCAR Sprint CUP Race on Sunday.

I am not sure how many cars will be there this year. Cars eligible for the Reunion are the winged 1969 Dodge Daytona and 1970 Plymouth Superbird, 1969 Dodge 500, 1969 Ford Torino and Talladega, 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler and Spoiler II.

We will be recording the entire Reunion in photos, audio and video. Highlights will be posted on this site in future weeks. There should be some terrific stuff for you to enjoy.

As for our Talladega, we got the final updates made this past weekend. This included changing out the Magnum 5oo wheels for some correct steel wheels and new BFG Radial TAs. Some updated photos of the car’s new (original) look are included below. They range from old beater 50’s machines in a combination of primer and rust to miscellaneous parts scavenged from a junk yard to make a vehicle for cheap. Others are highly engineered and mechanically advanced with suade paint jobs. Still others are pure rust buckets that are unsafe to drive.

Some of these cars are little more that 3D cartoons; one I remember is an outhouse on wheels (we have the photo). I am for this trend continuing and growing. In no way do I ever think it will replace the trailer queens, beautiful customs or restored muscle cars but this trend does fill a niche.

I provides a way for a guy or gal to build a car for little money and get into the hobby with a car that will be accepted at most shows. It also provides a way to build a highly engineered and professional ride that can be driven anywhere and still be safe. However, I do hope that builders abandon the very unsafe cars that I have witnessed at some events.

We have and will continue to post Rat Rod photos we see around at shows on our new Rat Rod page. Click Here.

It is always fun to support such events and enjoy the youthful exuberance that we remember but do not share.

The two queens were lovely but we actually had three queens on board. I won’t say what year it was, that would not be gentlemanly. However, Katrina was the Homecoming Queen at her college, Fullerton State in Fullerton, California. The two MTSU queens were beautiful but I will keep my classic Katrina!

The Bird was also a big hit in the Parade. The most often asked question yelled from spectators was: “What year is it?” Of course, everyone should know it is a 1965.

Owning collector cars is much more fun when you drive them and take them out were others can enjoy them. I was shocked at how many of the college kids came up to the car while we were waiting for the parade to start and admired the car. Our bird is likely older than some of their parents! I guess it goes to show you that good classic design transcends the ages.

We were lined up behind this group of sorority and fraternity kids waiting to have a good time. The temperature at this time was around 48 degrees. We were complaining about having the top down and how cold it was; just look at the two guys without shirts!

My Queen, Katrina, jumped out of the car to take this picture of the car and MTSU Queens as we started towards the Parade route.

These kids were having a blast. I had the car in gear and idling the entire parade route and never took my foot off the brake! They were having way too much fun throwing candy to kids, stopping to cheer and otherwise keep warm and excited.
