Previously we brought you a video of the 1968 Daytona 500. By February 1969 the Daytona 500 was shapping up to be battle of all the aero cars. Ford drivers showed up with the Talladega. Even the Mercury drivers were in Talladegas since the Mercury Spoiler II was not even in production yet and therefore did not qualify for homologation. Unfortunately, the new Boss 429 engine also had not been homologated and the trusty 427 was in all the cars.

Dodge showed up with what MOPAR fans thought was going to blow the competition away, the Dodge 500. It had a new aero package and a Hemi but it was too little too late.

LeeRoy Yarbrough in his Talladega showed them what the Blue Oval boys could do. It was the 11th annual running of the Daytona 500 and the finish was as thrilling for Ford fans as the 2011 Trevor Bayne and Wood Brothers win.

We sometimes have historical paperwork and videos donated to us which provide invaluable background context to our collector cars. On our sister site, www.TalladegaSpoilerRegistry.com, we have been providing a series of Ford Intra-Comapny memos regarding the development of the 1969 Ford Talladega, Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II and Boss 429 engine. Prior to jumping into the NASCAR aero wars with the Talladega and Spoiler II Ford Motor Company had already made a lasting racing, “Total Performance”, name for itself around the World when it won the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. That effort was beyond any similar attempt by any Ameriacan car company.

This video provided by Mike Teske and Rick Toombs is not the highest quality but it extremely interesting and provides real insider’s look at Ford’s engineering department back in the day. This is the heritage our aero cars are built on!

Our good friend Tim Lopata of Forge Muscle Car Show fame as done us another huge favor and provided us with this longest film know to exist of the first 2011 Indy 5oo race! This is truly a piece of history for any race fan or car gear-head. Remember, this is 1911, the film is black and white and there is no audio. You must read the descriptions as the film plays. What I miss most about watching this is the live piano player that would have played background music in the theatre back then.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway was constructed as a dirt track in 1909 but was much to unsafe to hold a 500 mile race. The track was paved with bricks and the first 500 mile race was held on Memorial Day in 1911. From the looks of this film the brick track was about as dirty as a dirt track when the race started. The first Pace Car (this was the first time a race ever had a rolling start) was a Stoddard Dayton Roadster driven by Speedway President Carl G. Fisher. The one lap pace lap was conducted at a speed of 40 mph in front of 80,000 spectators.

The start included 40 cars lined up in 8 rows of 5 cars each! Before long pit stops began and oil from cars exiting the pits started to “oil down” the brick in Turn 1 creating the potential for a considerable hazard. Track management ordered sand to be spread over the oil. No yellow flags, just run out on the track and throw a bucket of sand down! I guess this was not considered a hazard.

Oil was not the only problem. Tires and wheels of the day were a constant threat to the safety of the drivers and the ride along mechanics.

Number 8, a Case, broke a steering knuckle on the front stretch on lap 87 and began wobbling down the front stretch using up a considerable amount of the “racing grove”. The #8 mechanic, Anderson, was ejected from the car and thrown to the track. Number 7, a Westcott, in an effort to miss the mechanic hit #35, an Apperson, which was in the Pits getting a tire replaced. The #35 turned over by the impact and the #7 Westcott turned end over end landing on #18, a Fiat.

The resulting confusion caused the officials to temporarily loose count of cars on the track which threatened the early termination of the race. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident and officials returned to their duties with the racing continueing.

Unfortunately, one fatality was recorded at the race.

Ray Harroun won the first 500 in the #32 6 cylinder Marmon Wasp with 477 cubic inches of displacement in a time of 6 hours 42 minutes and 8 seconds. He won $10,000.

We have some new information on the 1968 Cougar GT 500 we told you about last week. We have known about these cars for sometime but we are just now beginning to get some good details on an actual car. The owner and I still need a lot more information about these rare Cougars and the NASCAR race track promotional programs Mercury ran back in 1968 and 1969.

It is interesting to note that the Elite Marti Report does not mention the “Cyclone GT500″ option on this particular Cougar where the regular Deluxe Marti Report did. I am now wondering if it was only listed on the other report because it was destined for the Charlotte Raceway program like the Cyclones? Possibly the “Cyclone GT 500″ option was only listed on those Cougars and Cyclones that were actually used at the tacks on race day or delivered to their new owners at the race track. You will also note that the emblems on the back of the Cougar do not say “GT 500″ only “500″! So is this a GT 500 or a Cougar 500? We have also seen similar differences on the Cyclone 500s and Cyclone GT 500s but that is another issue.

This particular Cougar GT 500 was taken to the NASCAR Charlotte 600 race on Memorial Day weekend in 1968. The build date was April 30, 1968. It was then shipped to the Speedway in Charlotte leaving the factory on May 5th and arriving on May 11, 1968. The car may have been on display at the track or used as a courtesy car for race officials and staff. It is assumed the dealer picked the car up at that location and had it shipped back or more likely it was driven back to his dealership for retail sale. It was sold in July of 1968. The original owner’s family stated he was upset because he had to wait to take delivery due to the car being used at Charlotte.

The current owner does have the original title showing the July date of sale. The Cougar was purchased from the family of the original registered owner, who died a few years ago. There is no evidence or memory by the family of the owner ever going to Charlotte to drive the Cougar. The original owner purchased the car at the dealership but did not order the car built.

Here are some questions for you:

Do you have any Race Programs, Newspaper Ads, or Magazine articles that might further explain or document the Cougar or Cyclone GT 500 participation in the Charlotte 600 in 1968?

Are there any dealers or anyone who worked for a Mercury dealership in 1968 who can help with this task?

Have you ever seen any other Cougar GT 500s?

Were there any other colors besides Polar White in the Cougar GT 500?

How about engines? Where they all 428 CJs? Were they all Ram Air?

How were other cars equipped?

IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THE CYCLONE OR COUGAR GT 500 CARS PLEASE LET ME KNOW AT RFLEENER@COMCAST.NET.

Our friend Tim Lopata has a large collection of vintage racing moving from back in the day and agreed to share some of them with us. Here is one that all of you drag racers will find interesting. It is vintage 1970 lots of action from the Bristol Drag Strip.

This is a little long but if you like racing you will love this. If you are too young to know what it was like in the beginning this will help explain it all. If you were there you most likely don’t remember it! Sit back and enjoy the way it was! The closing says it all…..

“Drag Racing? Well, its anything but a drag!”

Displays were held on the infield on Friday, Saturday and Sunday but the big activity was the “on track” event on Saturday immediately following Cup qualifying. These are all Legendary cars and to see them and to drive one on this most famous track of all was a thrill that will not soon leave the gearhead!

The Trans Am racing series from the late 60s and early 70s featured the new Pony cars that were just hitting the market back then. This included the Mustang, Camaro, Barracuda, Challenger and Javelin. There were a few others such as Porsche and the ocassional Firebird. These were the cars designed for the young and the Trans Am race cars looked JUST LIKE the cars they dove on the street. The racing series was emensily popular with some of the best race action anywhere. The following is a short clip but it tells it better than I~

I was a Corvette lover at the time and wondered why Chevrolet couldn’t build a Corvette like this for the street. I remember reading an article about how Mr. Ford tried to drive one on the street as his daily driver and had to give up due to all the attention it attracted! As much as I loved the looks of that car I would have never believed that it could do it all over again nearly 40 years later.

I was at Laguna for the Monterrey vintage races when these beautiful cars (pre-production models) were on the track. It was one of the very first public viewings and I was in love! The GT 40 remains one that I lust over but will never obtain. Watching this video is as close as I will likely get but I can dream.

I have been a little slow getting video and photos up of the big Aero Car event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Brickyard 400. Unfortunately, some of my photos were not usable due to a smudge on my camera lens the ones that aren’t smudged are loaded onto a computer which has been in the repair shop for weeks. When it returns if all is well and recoverable then there will be video and more photos. Luckily we have some good friends like Brent and Sherri Evans who forwarded some of their images.

What follows are some of our favorite shots from Sherri’s camera.

I want you to pay special attention to the images of the agile photographers STANDING ON THE REAR WING OF A DODGE DAYTONA! That car belongs to Brent and Sherri. I can not imagine doing such a thing but they risked all for some good photo! A big thank you goes out to these loyal car enthusiasts.

In the photos below also look for NASCAR legend Kyle Petty and his side kick for the night, Rutledge Wood. Also look for Leonard Wood, Wood Brothers Racing, who is doing some autographs including a helmet for Katrina and I.

In 1971 the Ontario Motor Speedway opened in Ontario, CA. It was built as a clone of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In those days the Indy Track was only used for one race a year, the INDY 500. The possibility of ever racing stock cars on it was unthinkable. That made the Ontario Track potentially very special. Unfortunately, due to bad management and poor timing the track was soon abandoned and eventually became a large office and shopping center. Although I lived for over 20 years very near here the track had been it was not until after it was closed, bull dozed and rebuilt into more typical Southern California asphalt, steel and concrete with lush landscaping added to add taste. As a city planning consultant I did some land development design work on the property with very mixed emotions. When it came time that I needed fill dirt for my new home’s backyard I actually purchased excess fill dirt from turn one!

I did live in the area long enough to attend races at the Riverside track and witness its demise to the same fate. What a shame! I was also there when the monstrosity of the Fontana Speedway was designed and built.

I recently discovered a terrific magazine article from 1971. It was published in the May issue of Motor Trend Magazine and was authored by Jim Brokaw. It is was of the most fun reads I have ever come across regarding a NASCAR race. I have provided a complete copy on our Resources Pages for you Team Members over at our sister site TalladegaSpoilerRegistry.com.

In a few days the Brickyard 400 NASCAR race will be running at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the first time I am aware of there will be over 100 of the Aero Cars (1969 Ford Talladega, Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II, Dodge Daytona and 1970 Plymouth Superbird) on display and taking laps on the track. None of these cars ever had the opportunity to race at Indy but some of them did something almost as good.

Back to the Motor Trend article! Remember, this is an article from 1971. Although this wasn’t Indy it was as close as any stock car had ever gotten to the famed track. No one was sure what to expect. 1971 was the first season after the Aero Wars ended with the Talladega and Daytona/Superbirds fighting it out on the Super speedways. No clear winner came from the 1969 season although David Pearson and the Ford Talladega won the Season Championship and Bobby Issac winning the 1970 Season in a Daytona.

All the manufactures had new cars by the time the 1971 season rolled around and the big winged cars were all but forgotten due to NASCAR mandated rule changes. So what did the Woods Brothers bring to the fight at the new Ontario Speedway? A 1969 Mercury Cyclone with AJ Foyt behind the wheel!

A total of 51 cars qualified for the 500 mile race and they all started three abreast just like the smaller open wheeled cars at the Indy 500. Foyt was not the only 1969 Merc in the race; there were many more. In fact there were four 1969 Mercury Cyclones in the top ten at the end of the race including AJ in the winning car!

When was the last time you saw a two year old body style win a top NASCAR race! Hell, when was the last time you saw a NASCAR race where you could recognize the car let alone the year it was manufactured?

The author, Jim Brokaw, does an excellent job of entertaining and summarizing the happenings of that day with blatant humor in this old Motor Trend article. Check it out!

On Memorial Day 2011 the Indy 500 celebrated the 100th year since the first Indy 500 Race was run. There were special events everywhere but in the Museum every winning car was on display! It was a spectacle that could humble any true race fan. Katrina and I were fortunate enough to be able to droul our way through the entire exhibit without being crushed by the crowds. As a result we put together a very special video to share our experience with our Legendary Collector Cars fans.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did putting it together.

The infield at the Indy 500 is always a party. Not the best place for a race fan though.

We went to our first Indy 500 back in the early 70s and have really enjoyed returning on a regular basis. We don’t go every year but the 100th Anniversary of the first Indy 500 back in 1911 was just too much to pass up. The cars are great and I love the Indy Museum but the people watching is fantastic. Although this year I was very disappointed in how many obnoxiously drunk and rude young people were there. It appeared that their main goal in life was to see how self centered and drunk they could get. I must be getting too old; my wife and I are no prudes but this new crowd of Indy 500 fans make NASCAR fans look like upper crust elitist!

There are always plenty of pretty girls around, on the track and out in the campgrounds!

How about them ear plugs?

We will be back next year and see how the people are then make our decision if it is still fun.

We met plenty of fine folks while we were there but they generally were the older, real race fans and not the punks there for a party. One suggestion to the new crew running Indy, get some security out on the grounds. Not once all weekend did we have any security guard want to inspect a backpack or look in a purse; not once! Saturday is the slow day and we were able to walk into the track and go almost anywhere we wanted without anyone questioning us; asking us where we were going or why. It was nice but in today’s society it was also a bit unsettling.

We camped outside turn 4 in our motor home and the night before the race and got very little sleep. The sirens were a constant blast in our ears. Between all the drunks and other idiots at the track the local police and state patrol had their hands full.

Also coming up in the next couple of weeks are more photos of the Nashville Good Guys; updates on the Project Barn Find AMX and Project Gloriana Mustang as well as a review of a great new car movie, Deuce of Spades. In June we will have a Feature that will blow you away but can’t say a thing about it yet.

Marty Burke, Team Member in the Talladega Spoiler Registry, reports that he recently took his Talladega and Spoiler II out to play with a couple of Mopars on the asphalt at Texas Motor Speedway for the cameras of Motor Trend Classic.
How hard can work be when you have four beautiful cars like this running at speeds over 100 MPH and have one of the more respected magazine franchises taking pictures of your car? This was a once in a life time event for any gearhead.

This story was provided by Dave Semel with photos by Mike Hacker; Story edited by Richard Fleener.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s drag racing was becoming a popular form of motor sports and Marty Hacker, like most of us, loved to drag race whenever he got a chance. At the track one car would always catch his eye, the ‘41 Willys. Today, rat rodders and drag racers alike still love the Willys. It remains a popular street rod design and arguably the most recognized and famous drag/gasser body of all time.

The image of a ‘41 Willys was stuck in Marty’s head and he knew some day he would have to have one but never could find the perfect one he was looking for.

So what would you do? You would search for one that comes close and build the look you want; so the search was on.

Marty’s son, Mike Hacker, started looking for his dad’s dream machine. While scanning www.racingjunk.com , he located a Willys in Long Island, NY. They contacted the owner to let him know they were interested but wouldn’t be able to see it until the following weekend. As luck would have it, the following Wednesday they called the owner to schedule the inspection and found out the Willys had been sold. Disappointed, they renewed their search. Not long after, to their surprise was the very same ‘41 Willys for sale on Ebay in Cape Cod, MA.

The eBayer even used the very same pictures the original owner used! It seems the new owner’s wife was not very happy with his purchase and he was given the option: “Live in it or sell it.” This is when some guys would say, “I am going to miss my warm bed but I love that car!”

Marty and Mike were beginning to think that just maybe this was the one!

One thing led to another and the car was acquired and delivered. Mike knew his dad had wanted a Willys for years so he decided to build him one, the way he’d always wanted it…starting with the Willys they’d just picked up from eBay.

Unfortunately, the mold used to make the body was not of the best quality. Mike was very frustrated and decided the best way to build his dad’s dream was to redo all of the fiberglass. He cut almost every seam apart and after several months had everything fitting to his satisfaction.

Today, the Willys sits on an Art Morrison tube chassis. Mike adjusted the mid section of the frame to accommodate a new straight axle. A 454 Chevy engine bored out to 468 cubic inches with a BDS 8-71 blower was added. A TH400 transmission with a 3600 stall converter and a Ford 9 inch rear with Moser axles and Strange center section with 4.30 gears, Detroit Locker and disc brakes finish off the power train. “It is about 550 horsepower, my friends helped me every night till 1am for four weeks to get it together” states Mike.

He feels the best part of all the hard work, and of course the most fun, is when you start seeing all the painted and buffed pieces being assembled. It’s amazing to step back at the end of the day to see the car coming together. Mike said, “The best part was when the nose was pinned on, laid down and you were able to see how it looks… like it’s going to jump on you and eat you!”

This wasn’t Mike’s first build, did all the modifications to the body and frame but this was his first paint job… all completed in a 2 car garage. It took 4 years of nights and weekends, 96 cases of beer and 3 ulcers, to build his father’s dream. (You wonder if it would have taken less time or more if there had been less beer involved!)

When asked if he had it to do all over again what would he do, Mike said, “I should have started from scratch on everything… but live and learn.”

Marty’s really proud of all the hard work son Mike put into this project. The Willy’s was recently picked as 1 of 12 top cars at The Wheels of Time Street Rod Jamboree. Coolest thing about that; it didn’t even have the interior completed yet! Mike said he was even interviewed by Sam Memmolo (the guy from Shade Tree Mechanic and Two Guys Garage) at the show.

According to Mike, the car is a nostalgic gasser, with what he calls “modern detail.”

Mike and Marty are very happy that they have completed most of the dream; and getting the interior completed will likely lead to other projects to work on in the future. As we know, there are always some additional improvements we all would like to make on our cars.

Ten years ago we lost Dale Earnhardt but today the Wood Brothers were reborn! I don’t care if you are a Chevy fan, MOPAR addict or a Blue Oval nut you have to appreciate what the Wood Brothers have done at Daytona. They are the history of NASCAR; they are not one of the mega multi-car teams; they don’t have the deep pockets and mega sponsors but they have spirit and talent.

How terrific is it to not only see the historic Wood Brothers and the fabulous Ford #21 with Motorcraft on the hood win the 500 but to do it with a rookie? Trevor Bayne seems like a jewel and a new potential Superstar. In his first Cup race at Daytona he showed the maturity not seem in many older drivers. This is one kid I am going to watch and support all the way!

NASCAR needs a lot to be back on top. One of the things it has needed is a strong tie to its roots. Today, those roots flourished with the great Wood Brothers and there sons back in winners circle. If you are a Ford or Mercury person these colors and that number are symbols to all of us of what are cars were built to do.

Hats off to Trevor and the Woods Brothers!

This is a previous project of this Salem, VA High School class!

In the first part of the story about Wendell Scott we showed you some of his old Barn Find Race cars and a couple of videos about his career. Now it is time to see how this man is still making history today long after his death. Chris Overfield is a High School Motorsports instructor in Salem, VA. Which is close to Danville where Wendell Scott lived. Wendell’s wife, Mary, and his youngest daughter, Sybill, know that Overfield’s class is starting on the recreation of one of Wendell’s cars and are supportive of their efforts. It is a tribute car that will be the red/orange Torino that he had during the 69-70 season before he crashed it in NJ.

This a picture of Wendell Scott and his Torino from back in the day. This is the motivation behind the tribute car.

The wrecked race car is the same chassis that became Barry Miller’s Benny Parsons race car. If you look closely at the photos on the link to the Parsons car you can see it in the Wendell Scott colors! The class is working with Barry Miller to obtain photos and measurements to get their tribute car as close as they can to the original without spending a ton of greenbacks. The build is being financed by a friend of instructor Overfield.

To date this high school class has the front clip under the car and some of the roll cage done. Overfield says he has spoken to a lot of people and they are all happy the class is doing this tribute car. They are currently working from the back of the car to the front as they have found out the back is the cheapest part of the construction.

We sometimes forget about the history and the stories behind the cars we find and collect. One of the things I love most about car collecting are the people and the stories. Most of us get a kick out of Barn Finds and even strolling through junk yards. We enjoy the vintage iron in its “used and abandoned” condition. The next time you see one of these vehicles think of what the history behind it might tell.

I recently received several Barn Find photos of Wendell Scott’s old race cars. Many of you will say so what or ask who is Wendell Scott? Well, Wendell Scott was the first Black race car driver in NASCAR to win a Grand National (today’s CUP series) race! He was also an underfunded independent who loved racing but struggled throughout his life. If you ever saw the Richard Pryor movie Greased Lightening that was the Hollywood version of Wendell’s life.

Here are some Barn Find photos of Wendell Scott’s race cars provided by Bob Duprie.

Want to know a little more about Wendell Scott? We have included a two part video done by Ned Jarrett back in the day that will give you a good start on not only getting to know who Wendell Scott is but what the original NASCAR was really like.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Bob Duprie stated that Wendell’s old race cars were found behind the home of Wendell’s sister a number of years ago. According to Duprie there is a lot of history of NASCAR with these pictures. Look at how many years these cars were sitting in the trees. One fellow bought the original #34 red car and the #34 hauler. The white car which was actually a more significant car in history but sat for several more years. It is believed that this car was once owned and raced for two years by by David Pearson and then was given to Wendell to help him keep racing. Someone purchased this car a little later for a reported $900.00. Anyone know where these cars are today?

It employed the newly discovered aerodynamics to add top end on the Super-speedways. This Road Test done back in the day used a HEMI powered 500.

The announcers concept of minimum body roll and excellent handling seems ridiculous by today’s standards but for 1969 and skinny polly tires it was state of the art. Watch for how much tire roll there is on the tight turns!

As fast and as pretty as the Charger 500 was it was no match for Ford’s new Talladega so it was only a few months and the 500 evolved into the winged and extended nose Dodge Charger Daytona.

News Release: Obama Administration Takes over NASCAR

Sighting a need to redistribute winnings among less successful drivers and owners as well as wanting to eliminate the heavy fuel consuming cars that currently race in NASCAR and replace them with newer more efficient electric vehicles, President Obama today announced the take over of NASCAR by his Department of Equal Racing Rights Opportunity Renewed (ERROR) and to be headed by newly appointed Presidential Czar, Brian France. ERROR will be based on an all new car developed by Government owned General Motors.

Pictured here are the new “Stock” versions of the Electric Networked-Vehicle (EN-V) street car that will be the basis for the new ERROR race car. It was developed by GM loosely based on some technology from the Segway. Unveiled today in Shanghai (future ERROR Tracks are already underdevelopment there and else where in China), the two-seater EN-V is a riveting two wheel design. The street EN-V was engineered to alleviate concerns surrounding traffic congestion, parking availability, air quality and affordability for today’s cities.

The ERROR track prepared versions will be powered by GM factory sealed electric motors, ERROR provided battery packs, and tires provided by union owned Good Year Tire and Rubber Company. A new Government developed stabilization technology now used in military applications will allow these speedy little ERROR cars to turn on a dime, and run up to the Federally mandated maximum speed limit for all new cars of 50mph. An unidentified sSpokesman for ERROR states that although these new lower racing speeds may at first seem to threaten the elimination of much of the thrill and excitement of motor racing, the open cockpit and highly visible driver will more than offset any “perceived” loss of speed.

Possibly one of the biggest departures from today’s NASCAR will be the use of integrated GPS. Although of little use on the oval tracks Czar France stated that the new ERROR GPS will be invaluable to the rooky drivers at the new Urban Street Road Course Tracks in Paris and Beirut.

The new Li-ion batteries can be juiced from a conventional wall outlet at any race track pit stall! This means that most of the ERROR race cars will need to be recharged at the same time and those pit stops will be somewhat longer in duration. A single battery charge is estimated to last approximately 40 laps at a 1.5 mile oval and slightly less on road courses. A complete re-charge of the batteries can be accomplished in a little over 15 minutes with an ERROR certified battery charger. What seems to be a disadvantage is in reality a blessing to fans. This short break in the on-track action will provide an opportunity for spectators to take full advantage of the concession stands and restrooms without missing a single part of the excitment. However, it is rumored that the famous Wood Brothers Racing Team has already developed a quick change battery pack making recharging un-necessary. A complete battery change in 5 minutes is reported by this expert crew. There has been no word on whether ERROR will certify the use of more than one battery pack at any race.

In an effort to attract younger spectators to the new ERROR sport there will be a mandated and ERROR built wireless ERROR-Pad that will enable ERROR drivers to communicate with their Pit Crews AND other drivers as well as fans. Through the wonders of the internet, TV viewers at home will even be able to listen in on their favorite drivers with the use of their own “ERROR-Pad” at home. These devices will be available for home use exclusively through the newly Government acquired Best Buy.

In what may be one of the most remarkable turnabouts in auto racing history, if not American history, is the announcement today that the sports first Presenting Sponsor for the new ERROR racing series will be Junior Johnson’s Moonshine Whiskey. From now on the new series will be known as the Moonshine Cup!
