Harlow and his Purolator #21.

We love these street legal race cars! Some are real race cars converted over to be driven on the street and provide a wild ride. I did this way back when with a 1965 Corvette dragster that had all aluminum interior, straight axles front and rear plus a 500HP+ 454. Others like to take a street car and give it the allusion of being a race car. From a guy who has done it, believe me the street car based clone is much easier to live with. I only put a few miles on my street car dragster Vette before I sent it on its way. Harlow was much smarter, he started with a street car and built the race car look.

Obviously there are others who think as Harlow does.

Nostalgic race cars are rapidly gaining in popularity with a big trend towards old NASCAR heroes. For all you people out there who think this is a new trend I would like to introduce you to Mr. Harlow Reynolds and his David Pearson #21 look-a-like. Ok; Harlow took some liberties with his build. He found his inspiration in one of the most beautiful and most recognizable NASCAR racers ever, the 1970 Mercury Cyclone Purolator by the Wood Brothers.

Harlow knows his car is not a Mercury but rather a Ford and he also knows it is a 1969 and not a 1970. What you don’t know is that Harlow has built two of these cars. The first one he put over 250,000 miles on and he is on his way to many more with his “newer” build.

Just like the old days…Pearson is fighting off Petty…but who is the fellow in the 58 Chevy?

Not only have these cars been his daily driver for 30 years he also makes sure they get their share of time on the track; as a parade car. It seems Harlow has always been a big fan of the Wood Brothers and he is a familiar site around their shop. He has a wealth of photos of his heroes both the ones behind the wheel and the ones behind the wrenches. He has been generous enough to share a few of them with us and I hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Here goes the real “Pass in the Grass”.

You may think Harlow is a little eccentric with his Purolator car and his extensive NASCAR memorabilia collection but he is equally passionate about Baseball and Bluegrass music and has equally impressive collections of memorabilia from those hobbies.

This is a continuation of our history of the Ford Talladega, Mercury Spoiler/Spoiler II

1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler Cale Yarborough Special 428 CJ Ram Air

As you may remember, Ford had to build 500 Talladegas to get the body modifications authorized for the track; this was also true with the Spoiler IIs. There was an urgency to get these 500 cars built but there were a very small number of potential buyers for these cars. Examples often sat on new car dealer lots for 18 months before selling at deep discounts. So what did Mercury do?

If you are not yet confused enough, Mercury not only built a Cyclone Spoiler II but they also built a Cyclone Spoiler. The Spoiler came only in the identical paint schemes as the Spoiler II but did not have any of the Spoiler IIs aero modifications (front end extension and rerolled rocker panels).

The best news was that you could order the Spoiler with any option that could be found on a regular Cyclone including the 351, 390 or 428 SCJ with Ram Air and even Drag-Pak! This gave the Mercury one up on the Talladega. If you wanted to forgo the aero package you could get the biggest engine Ford had along with 4-speed and Drag-Pak or even air conditioning in this NASCAR tribute package. The Spoiler without the extended aero nose is called the “W” nose for its shape as seen from above.

A total list of the VINs for Spoilers and Spoiler IIs has never been found like exists for the Talladegas. However, Mercury built both Spoiler IIs and Spoilers with the red and white paint job and the Blue and white paint jobs. The rumor goes that when the NASCAR inspectors showed up at the Lorain, Ohio factory to count the mandated 500 Spoiler IIs there weren’t enough built. The inspectors did see 500 red and blue tops but not all were Spoiler IIs. The factory pulled a fast one by parking the required number of easier to build Spoilers in the center of the parking lot and the real NASCAR Spoiler IIs on the outside edges.

If you think this was terrible, the Guy’s in the “White Hats” over at Dodge have been said to have done very similar with their aero car the 1969 Dodge Charger 500. Dodge just sat the inspectors from NASCAR down at one end of a building and kept running the same Chargers back in at the other end until 500 were accounted for!

It is widely believed that Mercury planed to sell the Cale Yarborough Spoiler IIs and Spoilers east of the Mississippi River and in the South while the Dan Gurney Spoilers were west of the Mississippi River and in the North through its dealer network. There is evidence to suggest this may have been the plan but it appears that there were exceptions. But we do know that the Spoiler II and the Spoiler by Mercury are very special cars.

Check back in a few weeks as we will do a break down of the Talladega, Spoiler II & Spoiler door tags.

In a 1969 intra company letter sent to the Production Development Group at Mercury, Ford spelled out what changes were made to the NASCAR version of the mid-size Mercury Cyclone to get them approved for sale to the Dealerships and the general public.

The following is a copy of that letter, in part. Note how it states that the torque box and rocker panels are the same as on the Talladega so an additional crash test should not be necessary.

This cleared the Spoiler IIs with their added front sheet metal and other “Aero” parts to make it to the show rooms and onto the streets a little faster..

Now that Ford had its Mercury Spoiler II approved for sale at the Mercury Dealerships it also had to build 500 of the Spoiler IIs to get them on the NASCAR tracks. Remember, back in 1969 NASCAR mandated that auto makers had to build at least 500 examples of any “special” body or engine before they could be raced in sanctioned NASCAR events. The rush was on to get the new aero “so called street cars” to dealerships for sale to customers.

Back in 1969 you could walk into a Mercury dealership and buy the same “stock car” that was the basis as the Mercury race teams were running on the NASCAR & ARCA tracks across this great USA. Mercury Cyclones were always a bit upscale to it’s big brother the Torino Cobra. The group over at Mercury spiced up the Spoiler IIs a bit with a red top and deck lid over a white body to honor team driver “Cale Yarborough” or a blue top and deck lid over a white body to honor ” Trans Am” team driver “Dan Gurney”.

Both the Cale & Dan Spoiler IIs carried twin black strips on the hoods and on the side there were two red strips if it was a Cale and two blue if it was a Dan. The Factory also placed Cale or Dan decals in the trunk of each car along with the rear deck spoiler and a steering wheel cover. These additional items were to be dealer installed. On most cars the spoiler was a competition black but there have been several examples of original cars with the spoiler painted the same color as the deck lid. It is also known that not all owners wanted these items installed and not all dealers added them. As a side note, these spoilers are unique to these cars and are not the same as on Mustangs, Cougars or any other car (as far as this author is aware).

To hold their upscale honor, the group at Mercury added a very nice red interior to the Cale Spoiler IIs and a really nice blue Interior to the Dan Gurney Spoiler IIs. With the nice vinyl bench seat in front and back they did have one up on the Talladega’s more Taxi Cab like black interior. There were no options on any Spoiler II they were all identical with the exception of two cars (one Cale and one Dan) that were built as heater delete cars.

Above is a copy of the Factory Glove Box “Owners Manual Supplement” this shows all the added sheet metal that makes up the 1969 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II.

Unfortunately, the Spoiler IIs only came with the 351 C.I. engine. That definitely gave one up to the Talladega with its stump pulling 428 Cobra Jet engine. Even a bigger disappointment to many collectors of these cars is the fact that the NASCAR Boss 429 engine that powered these cars on the race track was legalized by NASCAR when Ford placed this monumental engine in the engine bay of a limited number of Mustangs! The rules were that 500 engines also had to be built and sold to customers but the rules did not specify that the engine had to be in the same body as raced at the NASCAR tracks!

If you know of the Spoiler IIs you may wonder what the reason is for the Spoilers that were painted with the color schemes.

I am no one special. I have never raced a NASCAR, owned a team, been a sponsor or even stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. However, I have been a fan of the sport since I can remember. The first NASCAR race I ever saw was in bits and pieces and televised on the Wide World of Sports on ABC, now that is a long time ago! I have also attended NASCAR races from Sears Point (still don’t like to call it Infineon Raceway) too Daytona; California Speedway too Bristol and a whole lot more. Katina and I used to travel to 5 or 6 events a year. Now, I can hardly stand to watch it on TV for more than the last 30 minutes.

Why? There are a bunch of reasons. I think it is time for a complete overhaul of NASCAR. Fans are abandoning the sport faster than they were coming to it when it was in its fasted growth period. Back in the day when I said I was going to a NASCAR race everyone said “What’s that?” Today they know but no longer care, it is a joke.

First let me say the double file restarts are a terrific change but more is needed to get me back in the stands or watching a full race on TV.

1. Race the fastest cars that show up every week. If Jimmy Johnson spins and doesn’t qualify he most likely will get more TV time for his sponsors than if he won. This is racing folks; no “bail outs” for the top 35 in points. Let them earn their spots in the race.

2. Return to “stock” bodied cars. It used to be when someone mentioned a 63 1/2 Ford Galaxy, 69 Ford Talladega or a 69 Dodge Daytona or even a Monte Carlo Aero Coupe I immediately thought of NASCAR. Those were the cars out racing on the track. Even the regular Pontiac Grand Prix or Ford Thunderbird or other similar models reminded everyone in the know about the sport. Today not one Impala or Camry makes me think of NASCAR. They can still be race cars, just skin them with real bodies and play with the spoilers to make them all “somewhat” equal.

3. Go back to Heat Races. For the biggest change simply look at Saturday Night racing. Do qualifying as usual and race the top 44 cars; 22 in each of 2 heat events of 50 laps (number will need to depend on the actual track size). The top finishing 12 cars from each heat go into the main and line up 1st to 12th in each lane. The remaining 22 cars plus and those that failed to make the race in qualifying duke it out in the 50 lap consolation heat. The top 22 cars from that race line up for the main behind the faster 22. The main will run 100 laps with 44 cars. If a car is damaged in a heat and can not be repaired they can run a back up car. Points are awarded the same as today but the Feature (Main) pays four times as much, the Fast Heats pay twice as today, with the Consolation race paying the same as winning the race today. Teams will have more points to win and every race is important.

4. No more getting fuel under yellow; you can work on the car and change tires but no gas. (NASCAR could rule an exception if a yellow came out just as cars were ready to make fuel stops; they would need to come back in a second time for gas or tires which ever they didn’t take on the first stop.)

5. Dump the Chase. This has not worked, in my mind. It has simply changed the way teams race, or should I say parade once they are locked into the Chase. I went to Bristol one year in August prior to the creation of the Chase and it was the most fun I have had at a race. I went back two years later with the Chase and was so mad I will never go back. It was obvious that drivers were afraid to race because they had a good position and didn’t want to risk the Bristol wrath by being too aggressive.

6. No Green/White/Checker. This does make for some good racing but it tends to bring a winner to the front that wasn’t in the hunt prior to the extension. Why not just don’t count yellow flags in the last 10 laps? If the yellow comes out at lap 11 count one yellow lap and stop counting at 10 until the green comes out. If there is another yellow inside 10 don’t count those. If the yellow comes out after the white flag the race is over.

7. Increase the points for a win. The idea is to win races not a championship. I know that is important but how much more exciting would it be if you knew you had to win races to win the championship. No formal requirement to have won a race but give even more points for winning. Currently drivers get paid well even to finish last. Conservative racing pays these days.

8. Put the Lucky Dog down. The time has passed for this. It served its purpose but now we have drivers getting multiple laps back. If the Lucky Dog has to stay limit any driver to just one Lucky Dog lap per race.

9. No more double features at some tracks. NASCAR prefers to run two races at some tracks and refuses to spread the events around the Country to more tracks. How they can justify two races at California and only one at Vegas is beyond me. Do you suppose it has something to do with who owns the the tracks? I would recommend when there are two events at the same track during the year that one of those races be ran on the road course rather than the oval. If the track does not have a road course inside the oval such as Bristol do something else to mix it up so it is a slightly different configuration the second time around. Run the oval the opposite direction or put a “bus stop” turn out in the backstretch. Ever notice how first time winners often come at new tracks? The lack of prior notes and tests seem to be a great equalizer!

10. Finally, have the drivers stop mentioning their sponsors and team mates every time a reporter sticks a microphone in front of them. this isn’t anything NASCAR can control but owners and sponsors use your head. Blatant advertisement is a turnoff! Drivers currently thank everyone from the crew chief’s grandmother to the kid down the street for a great car and if it wasn’t for their Gatorade, Tums, Pedigree, M&Ms, Charmin Toilet Paper, PPG painted Ford Fusion they would never have won. I would love to see one driver scoot out of the car and say, “Damn, did I kicked some butt today or what?” While we are on the subject of drivers; we like to see real people with real emotions race cars. They need to have fire and drive. It is ok to dislike a driver. Early in his career I didn’t like Dale Earnhardt. He matured and became one of my herons. Same with Darryll Waltrip, and many others. Let us see some real personality. We want to root for a car and a driver. If the cars all look a like and the drivers all act the same what is there to root for? Who cares who wins? Why watch?

How long will it be before television takes NASCAR back to its routes? They will televise the start of the race switch to water polo or ice fishing and come back for highlights and then finish with live action for the last 25 laps. Maybe it is time for a new Wide World of Sports.

I am sure NASCAR and most of you really don’t care what I think, but I hate to see the sport I have loved for so many years turn into a joke of itself.

He won 200 NASCAR races and raced back when the racers bought their cars off the show room and hauled them to the track on a small car trailer behind a pickup much like a dirt track racer of today. He also drove in the new era with the full out race cars. He never drove the template built generic cars of today but that is probably for the best.

Race cars have evolved and improved in speed and safety but the soul of the race car is not as real as it once was. We have collected some photos of old Petty race cars and want to share them with you. We have some other old race car photos on the site and will be adding more as time goes on. Today we have added two very different Petty cars on our Feature Cars section. One is a 57 Oldsmobile and the other is a 69 Torino.

When you think of watching a DVD you usually don’t think of history or cars. However, I have a DVD for you that will make you want to delay that trip out to the garage. You will want to sit down in front of the flat screen and pop this sucker into the DVD player as soon as you get it, I did.

If you are into Pony cars or racing you must watch this History of the Trans Am Racing Series. This is the way it was back when your little Pony car jewel was new. This is the racing that made us all want to go down to the dealership and purchase a new Pony car. It wasn’t NASCAR or NHRA that sold Mustangs, Camaros, Firebirds, Challengers, Cudas or Javelins; it was the Trans Am Series. That is what won on Sunday and sold on Monday meant to the Pony car crowd.

These car owners wanted to go fast AND turn corners. This kind of racing gave birth to the Camaro Z28, the Firebird Trans Am and the Mustang Boss 302 as well as the Javelin SST, Challenger TA and Barracuda AAR.

When I first saw this video was available I knew I had to have it. I am partial to the early years of the Trans Am Series but always enjoyed it throughout the years of its existence.

This DVD does an excellent job of providing a quick historical overview of the Trans Am Series from its beginning. Included are some excellent racing footage as well as interviews with drivers. Some of their insider comments about the cheating going on back-in-the-day will put a big smile on your face.

Heck, the race track photos of all the young girls and vintage clothing of that period are worth the price of the DVD.

If you go to our Book Review on Racing page you can even watch a brief hint of what you will find on the DVD.
However, NASCAR had strict rules about how low the car could be. The officials measured from the bottom of the rocker panel to the race track surface. The light bulb over some Ford engineer’s head came on and he had a better idea. These cars had their rocker panels reduced in height so the race car could be set closer to the ground. To read how they did this, Click Here.

Ramo Stott owned and raced this beauty to the 1970-71 ARCA Championship and it still retains its original sheet metal and is unrestored.

We were not allowed to open em up and fly around the banking but the sheer experience of being able to once again bring these cars to Talladega was amazing. Actually, going around the high bankings at parade speed gave us all an opportunity to appreciate what the track really is and how gigantic the turns really are.

Below is a video of some of the activity but for more details and lots of great photos just CLICK HERE.

I am not sure how many of these vintage Winged Warriors from NASCAR’s Aero Wars days were at the event. There were different cars at each activity; some made it to all and others only went to one or two. At one point I counted well over 100 cars and more were still coming.

It appeared by my estimate that there were approximately 30 of the Ford products in attendance and possibly 100 Mopar products.

The owners of these cars are without a doubt some of the best car people around. It doesn’t matter if they have the most expensive Hemi Daytona or a street condition Mercury they are all genuinely nice car nuts. Best of all, most are not afraid to drive them.

We toured a couple of days from our host city of Alexander City Alabama to the Talladega Super Speedway. The site of all those winged Mopars and sloped nose fastback Fords was a unbelievable. It must have been a real once in a lifetime site for some of those small town folks living on our route based on some of the looks on their faces when we passed by!

Over the next few days and weeks we will bring you some great stories; the reunion of Katrina and a car she once owned; a reunion of a winged race car and a boy who watched it race nearly 40 years ago when he was only 10; photos of two Ford racing prototypes from 1970; a Talladega signature car once owned by Bill France; a preview of a wonderful new Mopar Museum opening after the first of the year and much, much more.

Thank you to all you regular readers of the site who took the time to come up and say hello. Katrina and I really appreciate it when you let us know how much you enjoy the site.

Ok, that’s me on the left and Katrina on the right…who is the clown in the middle? Tell you later.

If you are new to NASCAR or IRL or any other form of motor sport you need to take in a vintage racing event. Doesn’t matter if it is a drag race, road race or track time on an oval you will come away with a new found respect for the sports history. You will also have a smile on your face from ear to ear.

We recently visited my favorite dirt half mile in Oskaloosa, Iowa; the Southern Iowa Speedway.

Hope you enjoy the following photos as much as I did taking them.

Some of these cars really didn’t need but three tires; the left front almost never touched the ground!

One of the best run racing evenings I have ever seen. These guys line them up and run the next heat onto the track as the completed racers are pulling in off the backstretch. No wasted time. I think they ran 12 races the night we were there.

In yesterday’s post we gave you a recording of the Sam Bass portion of the drivers’ meeting but today you get the rest of it. The entire drivers’ meeting and images of some of the drivers and their cars.

If you have never attended a NASCAR drivers’ meeting it is a thrill to be there and listen to the Officials instructions to the drivers prior to the race. To some it may seem boring but to a real race fan it is being on the inside!

Put on your helmet and watch the video.

This past weekend the Camping World Trucks were in Nashville for their annual visit and Sam was back with a new guitar. It seemed like everyone wanted to make up for the shocking events at the Nationwide race.

Sam was the Grand Marshal for the race and every driver swore to hug and kiss the trophy if they won. Sam was as excited about this guitar as he has in the past and the croud loved it and him.

The following video shows Sam, the guitar and the portion of the drivers’ meeting where Sam spoke to the drivers and fans.

Hope you enjoy it.

If you have never had the opportunity to take in a World of Outlaws race or have never been to a dirt track in the mid-west here is a video for you. It is an exhibition run of a World of Outlaws race car at the famed half mile dirt track at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

We visited there this summer and just had to take in a race at this track that has seen its share of stars over the years. I had not visited for many decades but the racing has gotten better and the food was more than I expected but the highlight of the evening was seeing a World of Outlaw car hit the old dirt half mile at full song.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Oh what I would give to have this track in Middle Tennessee!

For Immediate Release

A new initiative from Roush Yates brings amazing value to all Ford racers

Mooresville, NC: Have you ever wondered where all the surplus Ford engine and chassis parts go from the various NASCAR racing series? In high-end Sprint Cup, Nationwide, Camping World Truck, and ARCA divisions, all racing parts have a finite life. At Roush Yates, the racing parts are systematically removed, tested, refurbished where necessary, and are now made available through the Roush Yates Performance Parts division, a subsidiary of Roush Yates Engines in Mooresville, NC. From Daytona-winning cylinder heads, valve trains, and high-tech manifolds to the latest technology in chassis parts, these high-tech parts are now available to all grassroots racers, whether oval track, drag racing, boat racing—and they are probably the greatest value ever!

Dear Shifty,

Father’s Day is coming up real soon and I have no idea what to get my Dad. He is really into cars. He goes to all the cruise-ins and muscle car shows. He has an old hot rod he has been working on for years. It has no paint on it that you can see, it is covered in rust. Can you imagine; it looks like it has never been repainted in decades? True, it hasn’t been driven much but it would look so much better if it was just bright and shinny like the other cars at the shows. I don’t know much about cars but I think it really needs new paint.

My sisters and I were thinking that maybe we should go all out this year and surprise him with a new paint job on the hot rod. I work at Home Depot and can get some sand paper and masking tape, the girls have a friend at work whose husband paints cars in his garage.

Here is what I thought we could do. I could ask to borrow the rod to take to a cruise at the Dairy Queen on Wednesday, instead I would take it to the painters garage, sand it down, mask it off and the guy could paint it and have it back by Sunday. Wow, would Dad be surprised! We also thought we would go with red paint and maybe even add some yellow flames! Just like Overhaulin on TV!

What do you think?

Dear Father’s Day Surprise,

Well, I can tell you are no Chip Foose or Einstein! I am sure your Dad would be surprised but I would be more surprised if he didn’t shoot all of you when he saw the hot rod after you painted it!

Look you idiot, leave Dad’s hot rod alone, don’t mess with a guys wife or his car. Home Depot sand paper and masking tape? Why don’t you just get some shaker cans and paint it yourself? His ride sounds like a sweet Rat Rod, you would ruin it if you painted it. Rat Rods are cool! Believe it or not; some guys spend big bucks just to make their new cars look like they are old and rusty! Sounds like your dad has a real prize there and it isn’t you and your sisters.

Want to really make Dad happy on Father’s Day and not just surprise him? Buy him a wide-screen HD TV and let him watch the NASCAR race at Sonoma that day. You can keep the beer cold and the girls can boo every time they show Kyle Bush or mention his name. Dad will be proud.

Signed,
