I have a deal for you. How about a FREE test drive of a new service provided by the folks from Sports Car Market? Keep reading, it gets better.
If you are reading this Blog it most likely means you like cars. Some of us are monogamous and only play with one brand of car whether it be GM, Ford, MOPAR or even one of them foreign types. There are some folks that only want to play with the real old cars and others are into hot rods and some into restored. Well, for the rest of you who are like me and will play with anything I have a magazine for you.
When ever you are bench racing with friends the conversation seems to eventually roll around to the price of our toys. There is Craigs List and eBay as well as the famous Barrett Jackson Auctions. There is always someone who saw a bargain and someone else who can’t believe how high or how low the prices are. Shopping for our next toy is almost has much fun as playing with it once we get it home.
I recently started reading Keith Martin’s Sports Car Market. It is a completely different kind of magazine. Most mags now have small sections which recap a few of the cars that sold or did not sell at auctions across the Country. Sports Car Market (SCM) goes way beyond these other mags. This magazine and its sister magazines and web sites are devoted to the world of car auctions. There is a calendar of auctions around the Country as well as results from previous auctions.
In addition to the excellent auction coverage there are also some excellent articles on unusual cars, as well as other car market oriented articles that can be very enlightening. In the copy I just received (September 09) has a revealing article by Dale Novak who explains in clear detail the differences in the car condition ratting used by SCM. I found it to be very informative and will be helpful in understanding future condition reports. Another great article was one by Colin Comer on a comparisson of a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona vs 1970 Plymouth Superbird.
My favorite part of the magazine is the recaps and comments on auction results. The authors take a car and describe it as presented by the seller along with the sold/non-sold bid. Then, an honest evaluation of the car and why it was a good buy or why it did not reach reserve is provided. These comments are very helpful. If you have ever watched the Barrett Jackson auction and wondered why a certain car sold so cheaply all you have to do is attend an auction in person and do a detailed inspection of cars prior to the bidding and you will most likely learn why. That is exactly what these comments by the authors provides you; they help explain the prices.
What if your world is built around eBay? Then they have you covered like a blanket at a Green Bay football game. Their web site at Collector Car Price Tracker will open up an entirely new world for you. They have collected the results of completed sales for every car on eBay for the past few years and the results are available to you in a search mode.

About the Author: I grew up and lived in Iowa for nearly 40 years before moving to Southern California. The time there was very rewarding but the urge for a slower pace moved us to Tennessee a few years ago and we love it. I have been into cars since I was old enough to remember. I don't have a brand loyalty although I do prefer American Muscle. As long as it has four wheels on it I get excited. Few men are lucky enough to be able to share their passion for cars with the woman they love. Fortunately, my wife Katriana is also a gear head and many of our activities revolve around the cars. When they don't we are usually out with our miniature donkeys. You can see more about that part of our lives at http://www.LegendaryFarms.com.
